2023.03.30 03:11 Amarahovski Lost dog alert
Was walking my dog when someone in an orange mustang stopped next to me (eastbound). A middle aged African American woman, who was driving the car, rolled down her window and asked if I had seen a "very nice, grey pitbull named Knuckles" - she seemed distraught and concerned as a genuine dog owner would. I didn't catch everything she said because of traffic, but I believe she said he had last been seen by the Lake City Public Library.
This happened at NE 125th and Roosevelt Way NE just 5 minutes ago, and when I said I'd keep an eye out and wisher her good luck, she drove off in the direction she was going (East, through the intersection towards Lake City Way).
I am unfortunately tied up for the night but wanted to put this out there in case anyone saw this poor, lost pupper š¤šš

I didnāt wake up to my alarm this morning. My nerves had pulled me from sleep well before it was supposed to go off. I was staring at the ceiling while Virnix still slept soundly beside me. Eventually, I resigned that I wasnāt going back to sleep and pulled myself from the bed. Making my way downstairs I entered the kitchen and flipped on the lights.
First challenge of the day: Breakfast. Going through the kitchen I tried to make out my options. The fridge included an assortment of leafy greens, fruits every color of the rainbow, and a few different kinds of root-based plants. My search of the pantry had yielded a loaf of bread, some kind of milled grain, various bags of humans snacks, amongst other foodstuffs. Eventually, I settled on the bread and some kind of round orange fruit.
I found that the bread was fluffier than I was used to, but not unpleasant. As I began to inspect the fruit, I heard the sound of claws clicking across the floor.
āYouāre up early,ā Virnix called out behind me.
I picked at the fruit as she came up behind me. āCouldnāt sleep,ā I sighed.
āWhat are you eating?ā
āBread and⦠whatever this is called.ā Puncturing the fruit with a claw revealed that there was some sticky juice inside. āThe kids?ā
She sat down and grabbed a slice of bread. āStill asleep. They were up too late last night exploring the house.ā
We sat quietly as we ate. After my first bite of the fruit, I decided to peel off the rest of the rind. The botanists may say the peels are good for you, but what do they know? They seem to change their stance on what to eat every few months.
āWhen do you need to be to work?ā Virnix asked as I popped the last piece of fruit into my mouth.
I glanced at the clock on the wall for a few moments before giving up and checking the time my pad. āI need to be there in about two hours. Iām planning on leaving after Iām done eatingā I rinsed my paws in the sink and looked to her. She was staring silently at the bread. āIs everything alright?ā I asked.
She looked down. āIām fine,ā she said softly. āJust⦠be safe today, okay. Promise me that.ā
I put my hand on her shoulder. āI promise.ā I stepped to the door and rested it on the handle. Donāt put this off, just push through this. āIāll be home later tonight. I love you.ā I turned the handle and forced myself outside.
As the door clicked closed behind me, I heard one final thing.
It sounded like: āI love you too.ā
There werenāt many other cars on the road as I traveled. The city seemed to be mostly still asleep. Maybe I didnāt need to leave quite so early. Well, worst case scenario, theyāll just have me wait around. Who knows what theyāre going to do if Iām late? Right now I had to prove two things. First was that I was going to be useful. Second was that I wasnāt going to cause problems.
Simply put, I had to prove to the Humans that I was worth keeping my family safe here.
The car slowed to a stop outside an entrance label in Human script which my data pad translated to: āCERN Employee Entranceā.
Just like the paper said. I stepped from the car and pushed the doors to the building open. As I entered, my nose picked up some kind of wet odor it couldnāt identify. Behind a counter, a bulbous Human was seated scrolling through a data pad like my own. He looked up and spoke. āWow, thatās new⦠there something you need?ā
Whatās wrong with his eyes? Is he feral?!? No, if he was feral heād be attacking me right now. FOCUS TEVEST! Stay calm, and look like you know what youāre doing. āYes, Iām new here. Iām Tevest, I was told to ask where to go from here.ā
āUhh, yeah, okay, new hire then,ā he mumbled. He pulled open a drawer and rummaged through it. āLet me see, here. New hires. Tevest.ā He pulled a sheet of paper from the drawer and slid it across the table. āIām supposed to give you this. You, uhh, need anything else?ā
I grabbed the paper. āI-I should be good. Thank you.ā I scurried from the room, not wanted to spend a second longer with this Human than I had to. Once I was well out of sight, I read the paper I was given. It looked like I was supposed to meet someone called āDr. Backlundā. Next to her name was something that looked like a building number.
This wasnāt going to be too bad. If I could navigate around my old University back on The Cradle, I could find a building here with time to spare.
As I trekked around the campus, I began to get the distinct impression that I was lost. If there was an order to the buildings, it eluded me. The fact that I had to keep pulling out my pad every few minutes to read the language wasnāt helping either. Simultaneously, I felt that I was going in a straight line and going in a circle.
I spied a bench by the doors of a building and sat down, trying to get my bearings. Was this the same brown and grey building I passed 5 minutes ago or a different one? That blue sign with the line and the dot, that was part of their alphabet. Perhaps an abbreviation?
It was time to admit defeat and ask for help. Maybe I should just go back the way I came and ask the man at the desk for helpā¦.
I looked around. Which way was the front office again?
Whereās a human when you need one?
As if summoned, a human holding a white paper sack exited the building next to me. As I came into her field of view, she stopped short and stared at me. āExcuse me, would you by any chance be Tevest?ā
Why is it that every stranger I meet seems to know who I am? Itās not fair. āThatās me. Iām terribly sorry to bother you but Iām lost. Can you help me find where Iām supposed to go.ā
Her face contorted into a scowl. Did I say something wrong? Did I offend her? The Arxur cull the weak, but Humans donāt do that, right?
āLazy little morons.ā she growled. āIām going to need have a chat with the front office about this.ā
My spines started to rise. āI-Iām sorry I got lost. I wonāt let it happen again.ā I stammered.
Her face softened. āIām not mad that youāre lost, thatās perfectly understandable. Iām mad they sent you out here to wander alone with zero directions.ā She sighed, āThey should have called me when you got here. I didnāt expect you to be an hour early.ā
My mind began put together the pieces. āAre you Dr. Backlundā?
āIn the flesh.ā
My spines fell. āHuh, guess I wasnāt lost after all.ā
āNo, youāre definitely lost. This is a cafeteria,ā she said, holding up her bag. āWe got time, do you want to get something to eat?ā
āI uh, ate before I came.ā
āIn that case, letās get going. Iām excited to pick that brain of yours.ā
Do all their idioms involve eating people? I thought as I rose to follow her.

2023.03.30 02:36 queenofthescreen [Thank You] A postman wants to be a comic but his delivery is awful. The P.O. is a mail-dominated place but if a girl wants to work there, lett#r! Why did Henry VIII hate the P.O.? Had a hard time getting his male. Hear about the lady giving birth @ the P.O.? Guess we can call it a special delivery.
Goodies from goodies:
https://imgur.com/a/ik6GLtg u/welshfancy x 2 Thanks for the *amazing* Barbie card. Itās so cute & fun, I canāt stop smiling! I share the hilarity here for those who share our Bananas-for-Barbie brains: One Barbie says to the other: āIf only all men were like Kenā¦ā & the other Barbie replies: āItād be perfect! When you get bored you just put him away in a shoe-box! LOL!!! Including a close-up pic of it through the link :)
In one of our DMs & in my last thanks post, you shared that you really enjoy jokes. Iām kinda blushing here with some of these jokes, but I wanna gift you some laughs for this beautiful Barbie card. BTW ***I love men***, and I know we all do on this sub (even our friend whoās apparently selling their husband on the meta sub haha), so no offense to any of the lovely men on this sub. K, you sweet manly muffins? These are stupid stereotypes but shared only in the spirit of fun, no harm, & obviously we canāt live without yāall. I donāt think. ;) This is purely to entertain our friend
u/welshfancy here because she deserves it after the job rollercoaster sheās been on lately. But if anyone takes offense, Iāll immediately delete them. Better yet - feel free to post some funny revenge jokes about women. But remember, if you do, weāll be sure to send appropriate āthank youā cards hahaha!
*Do you know what the insensitive bit at the base of a guyās
manhood is called? The man. ;)
*Whatās the difference between men & government bonds? Bonds mature. =)
*Whatās the difference between E.T. & men? At least E.T. phoned the hell home.
*Whatās the difference between men & vultures? Vultures wait until youāre dead before ripping your heart out. ;)
*Why are men like blenders? You know you need one, but youāre not quite sure why.
*Whenās the only time you can change a man? When heās a baby.
*How do men help clean the house? They lift their legs so you can vacuum underneath.
*What did God say after creating man? āHmmm, I think I can do better.ā
*How are men like laxatives? They irritate the crap outta you! ;)
*How can you tell if your husband is happy? Who the hell cares?
*What do men & mascara have in common? They both run at the first sign of emotion.
*What do you call a man who disagrees with you? Wrong.
*Why does it take TWO HUNDRED MILLION sperm to fertilize one damn egg? Because not one will stop to ask for damn directions! ;)
Hope some of these made you giggle. :) I also LOVE this illustrated postcard of the Moon from La Loteria!!!! Thank you. :) Girl, you know Iāll need to hear about your wacky wild 80s adventures in Mexico, right? Itās like you left me with a cliffhanger! Feel free to share your wildest stories anytime - Iād love to share them on the sub in a thank you post. But if you wanna tell me confidential story secrets, that would be fun too! :) Thanks for always bringing a huge smile to my face with your endless mail love! Wishing you infinite joyā¦along with toilets & men that arenāt full of crap! ;)
u/410bore x 2 Is your PERFECT cool-calligraphy handwriting for REALS?!? OMG if I had your hot handwriting, Iād write all day long on walls & the sides of buildings to show off, graffiti laws be damned! Your handwriting is so hella awesome, you should charge admission to people just to watch you write!!!! Thank you for the vintage NASA card, which was just the icing on top of your gorgeous calligraphy cake! Thanks so much also for the neato wooden postcard!! Itās so unique! I love that you bought it from the Santa Monica Pier. BTW Iāve been to the Adobe Max virtual conference before - super inspiring. Hope you had a blast! BTW donāt be alarmed if you notice that itās broken in the pic - I didnāt do it. That was courtesy of the USPS, which admitted its mistake. I honestly donāt know how they BROKE a WOODEN postcard LOL! But itās no less beautiful - my nephew loves it so much he wants to feature it in his room. ;) Thanks for thinking of me, kind friend. =)
u/MelodicEntertainer Thanks for the cool retro sausage ad postcard - love retro ads!!!! Yes, friend, youāre almost ;) right that āTexas = BBQā (haha, love it). I would edit this: āTexas = blissful, buttery, beefy BBQā ;) I know it may seem redundant to type ābeefyā but I add this because there are weirdos here who think CHICKEN & TURKEY classify as BBQ. I should take my shotgun & shoot them. Kidding. Just ācause Iām from Texas, it doesnāt mean Iām nuts enough to own a shotgun. =) I would use my glock. Kidding, again. Seriously I canāt stand gun violence. :( But the people who think that BBQ includes anything other than my blissful buttery beef should never, ever receive any cool stickers from any of us. ;) Iāve heard certain parts of Canada have some BBQ game too! Calgary maybe? Wishing you the sweetest, spiciest slabs of marbled, majestic beef, fabulous friend!
u/likablelobster Friend, there could be no more likable lobster than you. You became more likable by the minute after your adorable illustrated croissant & coffee postcard arrived! Did you use a ***gasp*** TYPEWRITER to type your super likable thoughts on this postcard?!? Iām obsessed with typewriters! I wish I had one from the 1940s! They are so crazy cool & believe me when I tell you that you became even more likable to me by typing crooked! I donāt know if it was intentional or not but THIS is the sweet crazy charm of using a typewriter - having no control over lawless words that donāt align to mad margins! For the first 15 minutes I stared at this card in awe, I didnāt even READ what you typed hahaha! I was entranced by the typing!!!! And then your likability catapulted to the moon when I read what you had actually typed. ;) I loved how you typed so much in such a small amount of space, you likable sweetie!!!! This postcard is now among my absolute favorites - because you typed through tumultuous postcard terrain & included what is the PRETTIEST stamp I have EVER seen (the super colorful illustrated Postcrossing stamp)!!!! Thank you SO much for making me so happy with your beautiful mail!
u/maiiiu Thanks so much for the super cuuuuute handmade āWriteā card! Your calligraphy of the word āWriteā is just gorgeous! I just love the awesome puffy-ish pastel-colored plant stickers you included - theyāre so fun to look at & I canāt wait to use them while sending mail!! I love that you have a mentor, & what a bonus that he makes you laugh! I say, next time, *you* get to decide what yāall have for lunch. Wishing yāall perfect palak paneer lunches that are free from rain & roadside diversions! ;)
u/dekabus Thank you for the pretty floral card with all your sweet sentiments on beauty! I found it delightful that you included the cool sticker that says ā
Vermehrt Schƶnesā or ā
Increase Beautyā in German! I love it!!!! I think the subject of ābeautyā is fascinating & want to share with you one of my favorite quotes:
āBut if a mirror ever makes you sad, you should know that it does not know you.ā ā Kabir Hereās an interpretation of the meaning from outofstress.com:
āThe mirror is merely a reflection of your external form and not of your internal form. Hence the mirror does not know you and what it portrays is of little importance.ā You are BEAUTIFUL,
u/dekabus, for so many reasons. But in this moment, you are most beautiful for spreading so much kindness & cheer to so many across the globe, especially to strangers! Thank you! Wishing you beauty in all its forms, beautiful friend. =)
u/jess_4943 Thanks for the pretty hyacinth postcard decorated with the fun stickers! I really love the lightbulb sticker that has flowers growing within it, like a terrarium! Depictions of mini terrariums housed in unusual objects always delight me!! Wishing you terrariums of joy! =)
u/wabisabi_sf Thanks for the serene RAoC 10th anniversary beach postcard with my name written in your *gorgeous* calligraphy! I appreciate your kind words & wish you beaches of beauty & bacon (if you like bacon ha)!
u/kk6321 Thanks for the cool postcard with all the fun travel stamps! Wishing you a blast in Spain! Re: you wondering if there will be ACā¦a few years ago I was in Portugal & it was 117 degrees. No AC. I prayed for death & canceled my plans to go to Spain because apparently it was hotter there. :( Wishing you buckets of ice & balmy breezes!!!!
u/omggallout x 2 Thanks for the adorable Arriety postcard - what a fun illustration! Haha, how cool that we unwittingly sent each other space postcards!!! Thank you for the gorgeous depiction of Orion Nebula with the fun planet stickers! Wishing you planets of peace & prosperity!
u/lehmongeloh Thank you for the cuuuuute kitty floral postcard! You are a magnet to cute, my friend! Please DM me with your address & likes if I may send you a card. =) Wishing you all things that are crazy cute!
u/smellyann64 Thanks for the cool vintage Vienna House of Parliament card! I donāt know what your job title is, but you staring down barracudas & hanginā with octopi wins the RAoC coolest career contest! Wishing you safety & smiles in the sea!! =)
u/mypetitmal x 2 Thank you for the SUPER FUN, beautifully-illustrated Power Woman thank-you postcard! I love it! The artwork is so eye-catching & I love the comic-book panel style! It was my pleasure to send you the kitty card. My thoughts are with you & I hope that youāre feeling better. WHOA youāve been carding since 2007 - whoa!!!! So awesome! Have you ever counted the number of cards youāve received? To answer your questionā¦Iāve been a crafter since about 2016 when I started frequenting craft classes at a bunch of different libraries. But I only got into carding when I met the beautiful
u/Bridge-etti at a Victorian scrapbooking class & she casually mentioned RAoC to me! Imagine my delight at ārunningā into her again on accident/BY SURPRISE on this sub when she sent me a V-Day card & I sent her a birthday card!!! Iād been waiting to see how long it would take for me to cross paths with her since I never got her info and it only took about 6 weeks!!! Amazingly fun!! So I have her to thank for my new obsession - RAoC, & for the sad/fun reality that my car now looks like Hobby Lobby had a baby in it. ;) Thanks also for the super cuuuute friendship currency postcard! What cute doodles. Also love the adorable sticker you added! I hear you on the time change - same. Wish they would abolish it so we can prevent traffic accidents & other nonsense! Hope you recover soon & that your trip to Chi-town was a blast! Eat anything tasty there? =) Thanks for thinking of me & looking forward to learning more about you. Wishing you endless smiles & sunshine through RAoC & beyond, sweetheart!
u/thunderlightboomzap Thank you for the pretty illustrated sky card! You shared such wonderful affirmations - thanks for taking the time to share them with me! And so many! I especially love how you shared affirmations focusing on self-worth: ā
My worth cannot be measured by my paycheck, my job title, or a list of professional or academic achievementsā &
āThere is nothing I need to accomplish to be worthy. I am already worthy.ā Right on! These are amazing reminders. Thanks also for the āmental health mattersā & self-compassion stickers! Youāre such a loving, encouraging soul! Here are some affirmations for you on one of my fave subjects, creativity:
āI am creating in every moment, awake and asleep.ā
āI am free to take my imagination anywhere it wants to go.ā
This one is a bit wordy, but I like the spirit:
āI effortlessly connect with the universe's boundless inventiveness.ā
Thanks again for being so thoughtful & encouraging! Wishing you the same peace, joy, & smiles you gifted me!
u/drguinea Thanks for the beautiful pastel flower postcard! Looking at all the pretty colors brightens my spirits. YESSSSS Iām all about David on Schittās Creek! I recall Googling the heck out of him when I first watched the show - itās so easy to fall in love with him. But sad for me, heās too hot & gay so whatās the point of living anymore?!? ;) And his real-life/tv DAD Eugene Levy - okay should I be embarrassed to admit that I fell in love with him years ago when I heard him speak live at a banquet in Austin LOL? He is HILARIOUS!!!!
u/LaCuntessa Thanks for the wacky fun Joan Miro postcard - love this art, & especially the smiling sketches!
u/hato_mailing x 2 Thanks for the GORGEOUS wax seals you sent along with the sweet nature postcards. :) The seals are simply stunning & a total wonder to look at, wow! The turquoise & silver seals are especially fun & fanciful! Thanks for letting me be a part of your fun mail wax seal test initiative - super cool. :) Wishing you the hottest of wonderful wax that never burns you! But not ear wax - OMG have you ever gone temporarily deaf because of excessive ear wax? Itās kinda cool & convenient when your mom yells for no reason but kinda torturous otherwise. Kinda like how Iām torturing you by mentioning ear wax for no reason. Sorry I havenāt slept much. Wishing you endless joy in your snazzy snail mail experiments!
u/libertyprogrammer Thanks for the gorgeous Women in Art Ray Eames postcard! I canāt wait to study her films. And as a newbie, I went batcrap bananas over all the flippinā FUNNNNN & super unique postage stamps you included!! They are EXTRAORDINARY, & so are you for brightening my day with all this beautiful eye candy. Wishing you limitless liberty (LOVE the username)! =)
u/travel4me Thank you for this ****super gorgeous**** Loupaper postcard of the charming charcuterie snacks! Wishing you the crunchiest carrots, sweetest strawberries, creamiest cheeses, & bluest blueberries at your next social soiree! =)
u/missnettiemoore Thanks for the neato retro Absinthe ad postcard! Love vintage ads. Iāve never tried absinthe either. But Iām all about the art! Wishing you days full of intoxicating laughter & love! =)
u/bluedecemberart Thanks for the elegant Alphonse Mucha postcard! Love your thoughts on watercolor vs. lithographs. u/tashmash Loved receiving a postcard from your fave ice cream joint! Thank you. What cuuuute diamond washi you used to decorate the postcard. I feel like American ice cream is devoid of flavofat because they jack it up with sugar. I wonder if your ice cream place uses more fabulous fat than stupid sugar in the ice cream. Your postcard makes me wanna pack up & move to NZ just to test out the goodies for myself. ;) Wishing you boundless buckets of chocolate cherry & cookies & cream ice cream without ice cream headaches!!!
u/Proud_Ad_759 x 2 This Winnie-the-Pooh card is crazy adorable but ALMOST as adorable as you are!!!!! I just LOVE your enthusiasm for snail mail & was so charmed by your cuuuute inquiry if I had received your postcard like a day hahaha after you mailed it from 87 states away! Seriously, your positive energy is so infectious & Iām so happy we met! I was also so happy to hear about your 6th senseā¦okay the same uber weird stuff happens to me. And it IS a ābig thingā my friend! Now how can we channel that into winning the lottery LOL? Just kidding. Sort of - I mean, Iāll take the lottery but to be honest, even if I won it, I would NEVER EVER stop exchanging cards with fabulous fun friends like you! I think Iād just use the $$ to juice up the process. Like Iād hire a full-time assistant to take care of all the RAoC tasks while I just read & appreciate the cards. ;) Thanks also for the funny Peter Pan postcard of the little weirdo exposing his beautiful belly! Just loved your funny, creative answer to my macarena dance prompt !!! If youāre okay with me posting your awesome answer, Iāll do that later when I post a special thanks including all the different answers to the same prompt. =)
u/BetterOwl3221 Hello-Hello Iām so happy-happy to receive this STUNNING Halo-Halo recipe postcard!!!!! THANK YOU! =) I'm including a close-up pic of it in case anyone reading my long-winded nonsense wants to check out the recipe. =) Iām bananas for illustrated cards & this one needs to be framed for my future dream house! All of the pastel colors on this gorgeous card instantly brighten me up & Iām even excited to live today if that makes sense hahaha! Itās kinda cool how one beautiful card from a beautiful stranger can instantly be a beautiful balm for oneās mood. I also loved your description of the dreamy dessert. It sounds so perfect & simply scrumptious! The postmark is from last month - it took ages to get here. And funny, this is the *one* card I kept thinking about for weeks out of all the ones Iāve ever requested because it just looked like the happiest card ever on your post & I was hoping it wasnāt lost. So the day I got it in the mail, I started jumping up & down like a lunatic outside near the mailbox & was so giddy that a kid passing by, ALARMED, asked me if I needed help. I was like, really, you kind moron? Iām smiling & laughing like a nutcake while holding this beautiful mail & your instinct is to call the cops on me hahaha?!? I wanted to yell at the stupid sweetie to check out RAoC so he could experience the kind of joy you made me feel. =)
u/Dolliesqueak Thanks for the super cool Night Sky postcard with the awesome Carl Sagan quote!!! I agree that we are made of star stuff =) Wishing you shooting stars & sweet sunshine!

Wishing you non-awkward dance experiences & the most aromatic cups of coffee, friend!
u/RideThatBridge Thanks for the super pretty illustrated floral card! I just love the Indian proverb you kindly shared:
āAll of the flowers of tomorrow are in the seeds of today.ā This is insanely profound & inspires me to procrastinate a little less with all my work. ;) Here are some of my fave Indian proverbs:
āDonāt poison someone whom you can kill with sweets.ā

Iām dying to hear about this fun/mean username! Iām happy *as hell* you saved me from a critical Pipsticks expenditure emergency (stupid student-loan-debt-be-damned) by sending me this illustrated pen & pencil postcard!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU! Iām batcrap bananas over it & canāt tell you how badly the nerd in me ached for this card when I missed out on an offer for it ages ago! I had never even heard of Pipsticks before I saw this postcard. And now I hope a rich, evil relative dies soon (kidding) & bequeaths me his/her glorious estate which I will then fill with Pipsticks utopia & host a Pipsticks party to which you will be the guest of honor! Wishing you the peppiest of perfect stickers!
u/shipping_addict x 2 Thanks for the super cool NY postcard in the shape of a stamp!!! What a sweetheart you are, sending me the roasted veggies recipe unprompted. :) Are you sure youāre not a southerner, Darlinā, with all that homemade cookinā & crazy cool cardinā? Thanks also for the *adorable* Over the Garden Wall tarot card!!! What is it about mini cards that drives me merrily mad?!!? I havenāt dived into tarot readings yet but am intrigued by what you wrote: āsuccess, achievement, failureā. All I know is, if Iām successful & achieve, Iām thanking myself. But if I fail, Iām blaming *you*, Sugar, & will send you the ugliest postcards of all time. Iām collecting a batcrapload of āem specifically for this purpose. But youāre so cute, sweet, & strangely southern in your demeanor that your polite self would likely write the most heartfelt, sweet lies about how you love it all. ;) And OMG you sent me a Lindsay Lohan PARENT TRAP sticker?!?!? So hilarious & awesome! Hoarding it for life!!!! Also love the cuuuute lemon stamp sticker & the little pastel illustrated cutie!!! Ooooohh I just saw the cool purple Broadway stamp on the envelope - sweeeet!!!! =)
u/SherlockLady x 5 Thanks for the cuuuuuuuutest homemade Easter bunny card Iāve ever seen!!! The smiling sweetie & the bright orange carrot right next to it on the spring-y lime green paper just put me in the best mood! Also love the āYou only live onceā card, the super motivating āBe brave be bold be youā superhero card, the super thoughtful self-care card, & the Eiffel tower scrapbook paper card! THANK YOU. =) I can only hope that they appreciate you at work & give you boundless bonuses so you can buy as many stamps as your insane, adorable, gorgeous, generous, syrupy sweet heart desires. :) Truly, you AMAZE me with how much you indulge us with your fun, frightening, & frighteningly fun offers hahaha! I honestly had no idea what in the hot holy hell I signed up for when I filled out your birthday bonanza form. All I know is, I keep wondering if itās my birthday when Iām surprised with a random birthday postcard hahaha! Thatās super crazy fun! Iām so jazzed that youāre upcycling all your cards & blessing us with them. LOVE all the b-day postcards - especially the Snoopy one. I donāt understand how that kid never ages. Thanks also for the soothing floral non-bday postcard. Iāll admit I was jarred that itās not a b-day card hahaha! I so appreciate all the fun, good vibes, & insane beauty you send my way!

2023.03.30 02:29 Dragon-17 I found this. Opinions?
ā Guardiola could leave Manchester City at the end of the season. If they confirm it, his replacement would be Luis Enrique ā, Josep Pedrerol was surprised when he presented the news on El Chiringuito , one of the most popular sports programs in Spain. Undoubtedly, the news caused a stir throughout Europe.
In his arguments, one of the columnists for the television broadcast, Javi de la PeƱa, insisted: ā Guardiola could leave City despite having renewed last year . He could remain linked to the club but he fears within the club that he will stop training at the end of the season . He already did it when he left BarƧa . He took a year off before coaching Bayern Munich . "
The chronicler even revealed that there was already a contact between the authorities of the British club with the main candidate to replace the Catalan strategist. ā They have spoken with Luis Enrique and in the conversation they also discussed the issue of money ā, he highlighted. In his space, the journalist revealed that the former coach of the Iberian team would sign an agreement for three seasons, in which he will receive 16 million euros net .

2023.03.30 01:56 LateralThinker13 Reducing your Problems
(This was written in response to a "what if aliens reduced humankind to 10% of previous population and left them to die" and run with. It was also written to get my juices flowing so I finish my other story. No conscious connection between the two stories, and no (current) plan to go further with this one. IDK, we'll see.)
It had always worked for the aliens before, for countless eons. Wipe out 90% of a primitive population, and its people would die off, leaving other species to eventually arise and take its place. Species more... biddable. Prevent any intelligent life, and the world would be one more safe, tame Galactic Preserve. As it should be.
Sixty-six million stellar orbits ago in local time, the third planet of a nothing G-type star had possessed a thriving ecosystem despite being a deathworld. At the top of the food chain, gargantuan birdlike carnivorous monsters, sea- and river-borne voracious eating machines, and more. The lush, high-oxygen world with its dramatic axial tilt and radically diverse biomes was almost museum-quality in what the evolution of many species could do when they were locked into truly hellish competition. Such a sight had not been seen in living galactic memory, and it terrified many of the members - and this despite no creature having evolved beyond rudimentary tool use.
The solution, simple. A massive comet measuring miles in length was coaxed from its nearby orbit to impact the land mass. The resulting impact darkened the skies, killed most of the plant life, and starved out virtually all life. Only the small, the adaptable, and the hardy did not succumb.
The galactic watchers washed their hands of the world and made a note to avoid it but to return and observe at a later date. Then they promptly forgot the world existed for millions of years.
- _ -
When they returned roughly 70,000 planetary cycles ago, they found that almost all of the megafauna and megaflora of the prior visit had not survived. But what was there still troubled them. Air-breathing, bipedal, tool-using omnivores had arisen in many biomes as the dominant species. Some were dark and furry, some orange-furred, most were arboreal, and some... near-hairless, but clothed in furs, carrying spears and tools. Intelligent, sentient life.
A threat. A quick survey found a supervolcano that, with some prodding, could be made to explode. And the smoudering supervolcano known as 'Toba' to the grunting locals erupted, blackening the skies for years and, as likely would happen, killing off all but the smallest creatures for a second time. This problematic deathworld would learn to be a peaceful uninhabited Galactic Preserve, just as the Galactic Emperor preferred worlds to be outside of the Empire.
And this time they promised themselves to return much, much sooner than their last visit. No scheduling mistakes would be made this time. By the time they left orbit a year later, world population of the fur-clad intelligent bipeds had dropped to less than a thousand. They were finished.
- _ -
When the aliens returned roughly seven hundred planetary solar orbits ago, the horror of their science teams was palpable. Structures visible from orbit? Continent-spanning empires? Cities everywhere? Domestication of wildlife, limited terraforming, farming? STEEL use? And all this from the same creatures who'd been Reduced to one percent of their prior numbers? PREPOSTEROUS!
Someone was meddling with this world. It was the only explanation. Well, the watchers would teach whomever was meddling the error of their ways. They took biological samples, modified a local virus, and sent it down to their densest population areas. Almost immediately, the plague they'd unleashed began to decimate the population. It was well-known in Galactic circles what an unchecked airborne pneumonic plague could do to an advanced society. These primitives, whose streets were sewers and whose medicine was limited to applying parasites to their flesh and murmuring incantations, would not survive such a thing.
Convinced their work was done, they left, but they promised to return within a thousand solar orbits or less. No more chances would be taken with this Preserve World. They would Reduce it as many times as necessary in order to tame it, as they had with so many other worlds.
-_-
Today
The science team thanked their paranoid security officer's admonishment to enter the system in full stealth. They'd thought it was safe. They'd thought they might at worst find a planetary civilization rebuilding again from its Reduction, maybe plying metal tools. They'd predicted a world not much different from the one they'd left behind seven hundred solar orbits ago.
It was what they'd have found if they'd Reduced one of their own colonial worlds and cut it off from all external aid.
But no, this world now had detectable nuclear fission power, a lively orbit full of debris and at least one functioning space station, multiple probes around the solar system, and a vibrant infoweb. They were spacefaring! Synthesizing complex molecules! Harnessed the atom! But how? No Galactic Species had ever evolved so quickly.
And with quick perusal, they did not see any immediate evidence of tampering. No icons to deities recognizable as a Galactic Species. No Galactic technology at all, just basic technology from metallurgy to primitive fission and limited fusion weaponry. Projectile and chemical weaponry, of course, but also limited EM weaponry. They were not yet a threat, but they were on the cusp of actually meeting the Galactic Empire! On their own!
At least they had not yet militarized space. It was not too late.
This, this, abomination could not be permitted. They shifted orbit, moving into the thick cloud of low orbit debris, preparing to planet-crack the world once and for all. This world would simply have to be a write-off.
-_-
The "defunct weather satellite" Š³ŠøŠ±ŠµŠ»Ń (gibel) was dormant but functional, waiting in low earth orbit. The fall of the USSR and the destruction of its ground control station and the deaths of several key KGB agents had erased its existence from memory. But its payload remained. Twelve MIRV-capable warheads, stealthed and shielded from detection as best 1980s technology could achieve, waited for orders to fire. Orders that, thankfully, never came.
But Russians being Russians, the design of the craft was paranoid. It could not be allowed to be seized; its existence could not be known to the world, or it would be revealed as a tremendous war crime and intolerable threat. So it had safety precautions.
One of which included requiring a certain coded signal (intended for maintenance) in order to approach it without triggering its proximity safeguards. But it had a second safeguard as well; if it received the wrong signals, AND someone tried to dock with it, it was to remove itself and whomever was docking with it with ALL due force. The intolerable Americans with their computer codes and space shuttle could not be permitted to expose their platform.
The Galactic craft probed the debris field as it neared the Earth, seeking to learn more about this doomed world. And then, wonder of improbable wonders, it nearly collided with the dormant weapons platform.
The probe signals and near-collision triggered safeguard one and two activated, and a nuclear fireball of megaton-proportions obliterated the stealthed (and thus unshielded) alien craft from orbit.

2023.03.30 01:19 flyinghorseduck 120 Items in a Hag's Lair
Use a d120 to see what you discover!
Roll | Result |
1 | A little iron horse figurine. If held by a creature that tells a lie it grows white hot, dealing 1d10 fire damage per turn |
2 | A bird's cage containing a wererat. |
3 | A bottle of troll's blood. If you drink it you regain 10 hit points at the start pf each of your turns for a minute but you are poisoned for an hour |
4 | Black Flame Candle of Hopus: The character that lights the candle draws the ire of all cats (and cat based races) and frightens all children that seem them for 24 hours |
5 | A petrified gazer. |
6 | A mirror that shows a clown (or some scary thing) standing behind you. It isn't really there, and it doesn't seem to interact with you, but is very creepy. |
7 | A talking skull. |
8 | A large firefly in a cage that will listen to commands. Glows red with the effect of Light. |
9 | A heavy old tome with yellowed pages and a blank cover. The book does not match the design of the surrounding books, and has a somewhat homemade feel to it. Nearly all the pages are filled with impressively lifelike sketches of an assortment of common folk, each with a smile on their face. All the drawings seem to be situated in the same village, with a single family and house appearing more frequently than any of the others. The members of that family each bear a slight resemblance to the hag. |
10 | A jar of candy wrapped in brightly colored wax paper. |
11 | A cursed gold chain necklace. Once put on it cannot be removed. When the wearer speaks a lie a link is magically removed from the chain, the link clatters loudly to the ground. Lie enough and it begins to choke the wearer. |
12 | A drum, covered in a mysterious skin. |
13 | An immortal monkey that looks normal but quickly reveals his undead nature in the moonlight. |
14 | A fist-sized gemstone to which the astral form of a trickster being is bound. Touching it allows you to see and communicate with the being. It begs that you reunite it with it's body. |
15 | A black cat sits curled up on a chair. When you approach, he remains unmoved, and trying to interact with him you find him immovable. If you attempt to sit on him/in the chair, you are cursed by the chair as the cat appears upon your lap and is the same as an immovable rod place on your knees. |
16 | Two voodoo esque dolls of other hags, with faint magic within, from when she tried to create a coven with the souls of dead hags. |
17 | An Ogre or Giants severed toe. |
18 | A crate filled with rotted childrenās clothing and old toys. |
19 | A deep water well built into the room. |
20 | A spiders hoard disguised as a perfect black cube |
21 | A suit of armor that was once a man. |
22 | Six inches of orange tinted water on the floor. |
23 | A book full of delicately preserved wings from butterflies and other small insects. |
24 | A harp strung with the hair of 100 different humanoids. Plucking a string will make the harp tell the tale of that particular humanoid's fate |
25 | Star Chart: A map of the night sky in its current position, even when it's too cloudy to see the sky itself. This is an accurate, shifting map that may be used to help a lost party reorient themselves. |
26 | A set of giant steel manacles that look like they could hold a giant. |
27 | An unusually large slug in a cage that produces extremely sticky ooze. |
28 | An origami figure of a stork. Has a faint conjuration aura to it. |
29 | A cyclopsā eye that has a bite taken out of it. |
30 | Dried batwing. |
31 | The preserved, leathery head of a dwarf. |
32 | A caged rat with gleaming red eyes and a chitters that echoes inside your head; if released the rat will burrow into the nearest persons mind, eating bits of memories, thoughts and goals. The rat cannot do this while the host is under some sort of anti-magic but it doesnāt get rid of it |
33 | A glass bottle filled with a foul tasting dark blue liquid. If consumed the liquid convinces the person who consumed it that they are going to die as a result. |
34 | A skull of any local beast, a candle melting upon it. When the candle is snuffed out, the eye sockets glow red. It then materializes the rest of the body as a specter, until the eyes are gouged out. The candle will then re-ignite. While a specter, the creature is a neutral undead, and simply watches and wanders about, being all spooky. Works best as a small creature, like a cat or raven. |
35 | An Annis Hag has a huge rusty nail, the length of a forearm. The person holding it feels paranoid and cruel, but gains advantage on Perception checks. |
36 | A ball of snot-like sludge hanging from the ceiling. |
37 | A fancy paper hat which causes the wearer to attract bees, wasps, hornets, and bumblebees, which remain non-hostile until the wearer removed the hat. |
38 | A piece of chalk which when used to write a persons full name causes that person to shiver. It ceases to work once all the chalk is exhausted. |
39 | Chicken feathers sticking out of the ground in bizarre patterns. |
40 | An active mirror of life trapping. |
41 | A mannequin wearing a crusty set of fine clothes which appear to have been soaked entirely in blood which has now dried completely. There are no visible stains on the mannequin. |
42 | A neatly organized tackle box containing a collection of human fingers and toes. |
43 | A cage with the skeletal remains of two small humanoids, the hand of one clutching the hand of the other. |
44 | A small child, apparently unharmed. |
45 | A large white table cloth that can be used to set a table. When its command word is spoken it cleans itself of all stains and food, then folds itself into a neat triangle. |
46 | A pair of slippers that automatically adjusts to be as comfortable as possible for their wearer. |
47 | A scruffy, scarred pigeon that nests in the rafters. Its regular sounds are replaced by snippets of the hags voice yelling insults. |
48 | An old tarnished silver bell. Ringing it casts Toll The Dead once a day. |
49 | A child's patchwork doll, missing a button eye and stained in blood. |
50 | A cauldron that can be used as a ritual focus. When used in ritual magic, the DC goes up 1 per person (limited to 3). |
51 | A broken arrow atop a bottle of rain. Holding the bottle allows you to walk on water. Holding the arrow turns your hand to steel (you do twice the damage of an unarmed strike, but take disadvantage on tasks requiring two hands. You can pry the arrow from your handābut careful if you take too long both your hands will turn to steel). |
52 | Dust of sneezing and choking. |
53 | The hag's kitchen is a marvel of inventive interior design, with hands that stick out of the walls, as though their owners were forced into the stone itself. The hands hold cups, cutlery, a set of keys, a hat, a dark cloak and hanging vegetables. |
54 | A strange jar of coloured jelly. Upon closer inspection, you find it is a tiny-sized ooze or oblex in a jar. |
55 | A picture book with seemingly no story, only vivid illustrations of children running in the woods. Flipping back and forth reveals that the children seem to move when not watched, and thereās something theyāre running from |
56 | A cursed ring depicting a smiling Fox that gives advantage on deception and acrobatics checks but will sever the finger off after 1d12 uses. Cannot be removed without magical means |
57 | Bones from humanoid hands which have been fastened together into a headdress. |
58 | An ivory comb, inset with swampy green stones, that causes anyone who uses it to make their hair grow uncontrollably and try to strangle them |
59 | A display case of flattened beast ears arranged in such a way that a distant observer may mistake it for a butterfly display. |
60 | A journal by a young lass from a hundred years ago. The entries are positive, optimistic, romantic. Somewhere in the her late teens she falls in love for a fellow and at the same time she's visited by nightmares, headaches and visions. Strangely the visions darkly warn her that her lover is dangerous, something she refuses to believe even when other things she sees in them come to pass. She writes that she plans to run away with him before the journal abruptly ends. A knowledge check might reveal that the symptoms she describes are signs of a changeling coming into her power on the path to becoming a hag. |
61 | An almost person-sized hourglass dangling from a rope tied to the ceiling. In place of sand, tiny teeth of all shapes and kinds flow between the two bulbs, each one glowing with a faint red light. The flow of the device switches directions at random times for nobvisible reason, with no bulb ever holding all the teeth. |
62 | Glass orb containing the souls of screaming children. |
63 | Leather wading boots, made from an unidentifiable leather, that allows the wearer to walk on water, but slowly turns the water they walk on into a swamp |
64 | A shelf of shoes: fond mementos of the humanoids (at least the most delicious ones) the hag has eaten. |
65 | A freshly baked pie, its crust perfectly buttered. |
66 | A male human's foot. There's nothing magical about it though, she hasn't gotten to that project yet |
67 | A purple glazed donut with sprinkles. When you eat it, it switched your highest and lowest stat for one hour, or in heavy moments of exertion, such as combat, ten rounds. |
68 | A plant pot containing a Shrieker that screams when you touch it. |
69 | A collection of clear glass bottles with tiny models of houses, ships, wagons, and things inside them. On closer inspection the tiny things are real and even have tiny people trapped inside, living dejectedly. |
70 | The still beating heart of some unknown humanoid. |
71 | A copper ring in the dirt that has a rat's chewing marks in it. |
72 | Eyes of various creatures. |
73 | Seven jars filled with blood. One of them has recently been emptied. |
74 | A life size "voodoo" fetish that looks eerily like one of the PCs. |
75 | A shattered mirror. The mirror shows a decaying and zombie-like version of the players, but a beautified version of the hag. |
76 | A taxidermy beholder being used as a chandelier. |
77 | A stomach and intestines hung on the wall, with a mouth connected to one end, and the other end leading into a barrel (I don't recommend opening the barrel). It must be fed regularly or it will jump off the wall and begin eating everything. |
78 | Erikkson the Philosophical Scarecrow. This scarecrow sits motionless in a part of the room, but will animate when he deems it necessary. He loves to eat straw (and flesh), and loves to tell riddles. He especially loves it when his riddles win him the flesh of others. But he doesn't cheat. He is a genuine and fair scarecrow. He wont eat any more than has been agreed on. If he says he will play riddles for a PC's hand, then he will keep his word. He also LOVES to talk about the metaphysical nature of the world. |
79 | An eyeball in a tube of yellow viscous fluid, sealed with a cork. The eye moves and looks around. |
80 | Eye of newt jar. Half full. |
81 | An aged drawing of the current PCs that entered the lair. |
82 | A chest with an ungodly amount of sweets. |
83 | A jar with an overweight toad crammed into it, that sings when lifted. |
84 | A stack of love letters written in Abyssal penned by a demon who apparently was smitten by the sight of the hag during a planar jaunt. Appears that the interest was unrequited. |
85 | Paintings and sculptures of prominent townspeople. |
86 | A large alembic which is currently distilling a medium ochre jelly. |
87 | Half of a beehive covered in Infernal writing. When the honeycomb is broken, an Imp is summoned. |
88 | An undead toad in a glass jar with a miniature Sphere of Annihilation in its mouth. |
89 | A dresser whose drawers are overflowing with loose hairs. A player who searches through the hair will find a vial of antitoxin. |
90 | A pin board of insects found in the swamp or Underdark, like strange beetles. |
91 | A wooden chest with a beating heart in it. |
92 | A basin of murky water that is constantly scrying a young girl, possibly a changeling. Vials of three colors with a dropper sit on the rim of the basin. Dropping the blue liquid in the basin visits the girl with good luck, red delivers bad luck to a someone near her, but the black inky liquid has no apparent effect. |
93 | A massive tapestry hung from the wall. Strange symbols and stranger images fill every space, chaotically strewn about the threadwork with no apparent pattern. No centralized theme or focus can be made out, but the likeliness of several important figures and deities can be made out amongst alien creatures and other, unknown people. The tapestry is unfinished on one side, making it obvious that the project is still a work in progress. |
94 | A severed head taken from a rival long ago. The neck seeps blood from its wound, and constantly softly whispers nigh incoherently, saying all that the witch had learnt from her long-lived life, tales of old, hidden secrets and recipes long forgotten, to name a few. |
95 | A severed foot with many different types of moss and fungi growing on it. |
96 | A decorative wine glass that poisons any liquid inside of it with cyanide when a command word is spoken (cheers). |
97 | A massive bubbling cauldron. Inside it is a disgusting mixture of god knows what. |
98 | A skeleton on an elaborate wooden throne that will suddenly scream and crumple if a PC approaches it, laying a curse on that PC. |
99 | A giant cookpot carved from granite, weighing several tons. It's big enough to stew several people inside. [MaxSizeIs] |
100 | A small collection of caged rats. |
101 | Tentacle from a vampire squid. |
102 | People converted into anthropomorphic kelp. |
103 | A back scratcher made from a severed bony hand. |
104 | A small box lined with teeth, when opened it begins hopping around a chattering loudly. Can be heard by any creature within 50 ft. Strength or skill check to disarm it. On a failed skill check the target is bitten for 1D4 damage. |
105 | There is an alchemy desk with the accouterments you would expect. Eyes in jars, fingers in candlestick holders, with thin wicks coming out of the tips, animal parts, and grisly looking things you don't think about too much. Despite everything, you can't but find yourself feeling extremely hungry while examining it. |
106 | Collection of art pieces depicting each PC worst fears |
107 | A goblin in a cage that speaks common eloquently. |
108 | The shadow of a rat on the floor, which moves as a normal rat would. However, there is no rat, not even an invisible one. |
109 | A group of small children trapped in a cage. |
110 | A broom of flying that wants to avenge the hags and throws off any character once they are high up in air with it |
111 | Corrupted rings of resistance (which are cursed to grant vulnerability instead). |
112 | An apple that reveals itself to be rotten if eaten. |
113 | A overflowing jar of teeth. |
114 | A small garden growing a bunch of weird herbs. |
115 | A tattered ball gown, itās faded green color and shredded edges indicating its impressive age. It drifts gently through the air as if carried by an invisible wind, moving haphazardly but never touching the room. Attempts to grab the dress automatically fail without the use of magic, the dress always fluttering just out of reach. Once grabbed, the dress stops permanently stops moving and shows no sign of its previously magical nature. |
116 | A cracked hand mirror, which always shows a shadowy figure to be standing behind the one looking in it. Sometimes, the figure moves. |
117 | A bouquet of flowers, suspended upside down to dry, smelling pleasantly of notes of lavender and rose buds. |
118 | A dead bird tied to the ceiling. |
119 | A starved and maimed goblin in an iron cage. He rattles the bars rather than react to the visitors. It is clear it went mad long ago. |
120 | A crude iron goblet filled to the brim with algae. Drinking the algae makes the imbiber immune to poison for 24 hours, but also makes them immune to healing potions for 48 hours |

2023.03.30 01:10 marniesus Investigating the "Ghost Experiments" with my ex, we've captured chilling footage (Part 2)
Link to Part 1. (Reposted due to error in the title)
The Photo
My head was spinning.
The polaroid photo of Jared and I was sitting on my laptop. Less than a day after I received his emotional plea to investigate a haunting at his home. It was impossible. The whole thing was impossible! I donāt believe in ghosts, and that photo hasnāt seen the outside of a box in years.
I ripped open my storage closet. Underneath many boxes in the back corner was the small pink shoebox, where I kept all the mementos from college. I tore off the lid and rooted through the contents. The box contained many polaroids of friends, parties, everyday items I framed in an āartsyā way, and a lot of questionable haifashion choices. No Jared photo. I examined the photo placed on my laptop again, it looked exactly like the others in the box. Yellowed from the years and covered in a light film of dust. I flipped it over, and saw a handwritten note. āLove you always - Jaredā. His penmanship was almost illegible, and there was a heart beside his name. Wow.
As if I didnāt have enough confusing feelings to process right now. Desperate to hold onto a semblance of reality, I texted Sara asking if she moved my photos. That would make sense, right? She learned about Jared last night, maybe she dug up my boxes from college? My phone chimed.
Sara questioned your message āDid you move any of my old college photos?ā - for non-iOS users, that means she held down on my message and selected a question mark. Since sheās at work, thatās likely the best response Iāll get for a few hours, but itās safe to assume Sara didnāt touch the photo.
After covering my shifts at the restaurant for the week, I decided to reply to Jared. I sent him a brief email informing him that I would be taking a ferry to Vancouver Island the next day. Afterwards I found myself writing down the entire experience. This is unlike me, I donāt journal, or keep a blog, or anything like that. Iām not sure what compelled me, but this event felt⦠significant.
The Ferry
I loaded up my crappy little car with all my equipment, and left at the ass-crack of dawn. Traffic wasnāt too bad this early in the morning, and I made it to the terminal with time to spare. I pulled up to the ticketing booth, and fumbled with my phone until I found my online reservation email. They gave me my lane number and I drove through. The booth opened up to a huge tarmac with around 20 different lanes, and I found my spot in line. I pulled in behind 10 other vehicles and turned off my engine.
Non-locals wonāt know what I mean when I say this, but: BCFerries is a racket. Itās like $100
one way with a vehicle. As my bank account drained, I remembered why I donāt visit Vancouver Island all that often. Beautiful though it may be. Maybe I can write this off as a business expense, I just need to learn taxes, and⦠business. Donāt judge, I went to school to study grainy surveillance footage. On second thought, Jared can cover my ferry costs.
After a long period of waiting, the ferry started loading up cars and I parked on the lower vehicle decks. For those unfamiliar, these ferries arenāt cute little boats. These are massive ships that can fit dozens of vehicles, and hundreds of passengers. Theyāre several stories tall and contain a restaurant, gift shop, play areas for children, and more. I made my way up to the upper passenger deck and got in line for breakfast. A breakfast meal with coffee cost me $20, and it left me feeling sick for hours. The racket continues.
After breakfast, I waddled over to passenger seating and managed to score a window seat. As I settled in for the rest of my journey, I finalised my plans for Jaredās ghost problem.
The Plan
There are three major events to investigate. The Ten Knocks, the Floating Spoon, and the Shadow Man. Here are my plans for each:
The Ten Knocks: Ten loud knocks ripple through the home every night at exactly 3:24am. According to Jared, the sound seems to come from a different location each night. As you know Jared already has an existing surveillance system. On top of that, Iām going to set up two Zoom audio recorders, and an old phone of mine to record audio throughout the night. From there Iām going to attempt to make a map of the approximate knock locations, and see what data we can generate. Iām hoping we can discover a pattern and isolate the source of these noises. Last time I mentioned a friend of mine who specialises in Forensic Audio. I'm hoping he can help me with this, but at the moment I havenāt heard back from him. Iām not sure I blame him, honestly.
The Floating Spoon: Surveillance footage shows the utensil drawer opening in the kitchen, and a spoon levitating in the air. Since the spoon's movements were quite articulate, Iāll be looking for any evidence of wiring rigs. I also brought a compass for detecting magnetic fields. Iāll be insisting on seeing Jaredās computers, to see if they have software that could fake these things with CGI. I should note that there were a few other objects I caught moving in the raw surveillance footage, but those could be faked with a single string. Unlike the Floating Spoon, which moved in many directions.
The Shadow Man: Iām going to get Jared to stand exactly where the figure appeared in the video, and take measurements for scale. If this man-shaped figure happens to be exactly Jaredās size, thatāll be a strong sign the footage is fake. If theyāll let me, Iām also going to inspect Simonās bruises. Finger-shaped bruises can be imitated with makeup. A sobering reality here to consider is that if Jared faked the Shadow Man footage, I may have to call Child Protective Services. Simonās noises and movement in the video indicated he was in legitimate distress. If I do determine the footage is fake, Iāll be demanding a detailed explanation of the hoax from Jared. For Simon's sake.
The Drive
The ferry docked, and I made my way down to my vehicle. Cell reception returned as we got closer to the island, so I entered Jaredās address into Google Maps. For those unfamiliar with Vancouver Island, this isnāt a tiny island you can cruise around in a day. Itās home to over 850,000 people and bigger than the Hawaiian islands combined, or half the size of Ireland. Itās home to a few cities; the largest of which being BCās capital city, Victoria, and many towns of various sizes. For privacy reasons, I wonāt be sharing exactly where Jared lives, but for context Iāll say that itās a small town.
Iāve driven through the Island a few times, but this visit felt ominous. Pouring rain from the grey skies splattered my windshield. The roads were flanked on both sides by towering evergreen trees, sprawling all the way across distant mountain ranges. As I left the cities and hit a winding stretch of highway, I couldnāt help feeling like I was in the opening scene of The Shining. My speakers blasted upbeat 90s classics to keep my spirits up, but the foreboding feeling was hard to shake.
As I approached the town where Jared lives, I decided to stop at a cute little coffee shop advertising free Wi-fi. Knowing youāre about to see your ex is nerve-wracking enough on its own. Let alone when youāre going to their home, meeting their wife, and presumably fighting ghosts. I ordered a latte, and found a quiet spot in the corner. As the rain pattered against the window, I called Sara on FaceTime. She answered, and I could tell she was walking home from the restaurant. After some small talk, I blurted out what was on my mind:
āAm I making a terrible mistake?ā Sara stifled a laugh.
āI mean⦠How honest do you want me to be?ā We both laughed this time, if a bit nervously on my end. āLook. Either youāre about to save a family and fight some ghosts, or somebodyās living in their walls, or your ex is pranking you. Whatās your plan if things go to shit?ā
āMore like
when things go to shit. Letās just hope he pays me upfront.ā
Sara knew me well enough to know Iām very safety-conscious. Working for a crime lab tends to have that effect. I had already shared Jaredās address with her, and called ahead to a local motel. I explained that I was staying with someone nearby, but had concerns about my safety. I would have preferred spending all my nights in a motel, but our āghostā only knocks in the middle of the night. Wendy, the manager, was lovely and agreed to hold a room for the first night. No charge unless I check in! It was their off season, and they had plenty of vacancies. I love small towns.
Sara and I decided on one final safety measure. If I feel unsafe at any time, Iāll text her a code phrase. Like āHow was your job interview?ā
Furthermore, we have a daily check-in, and if I donāt respond within 20 minutes, Sara will call the authorities. Realising Jared IS an authority, Sara wrote down the direct lines for EMT, Fire and RCMP in the hopes that someone will check on me. Our conversation came to a close.
āI love you, Sara.ā
āLove you too Marn. Stay safe!ā
āBye.ā
āBye.ā
The call ended. I collected myself, pulled up the hood of my jacket, and ran out into the pouring rain to my car. I sent Jared a text letting him know I was close, and drove the rest of the way there.
The House
Jared and Jennyās house is tucked in the back corner of an upper class, surrounded by woods. I pulled up the driveway, feeling very out of place in my crappy sedan. An old woman standing outside in a neighbouring front yard eyed my poor ass with suspicion. I ignored her. The house was modern, bright white with black accents, and completely unassuming. The rain had lifted, and a sliver of sunlight made the house seem positively welcoming. Despite seeing the house in videos and pictures, a part of my brain expected some sort of haunted castle. Which couldnāt be further from the truth.
I had barely gotten out of my car when Jared and Jenny came outside to greet me. Itās always a little awkward sussing out the etiquette when meeting up with your ex after several years. Do we shake hands, or hug, or exchange an explosive fist bump? I was panicking a little, but Jenny cut right through that by springing an enthusiastic hug on me.
āOh my god hiii!ā Jenny had that gorgeous, effortless, hippy-island-girl thing going on. Her shoulder-length straight hair was blonde, and she wore a long, flowing olive cardigan, and black leggings with sneakers. āItās so nice to meet you! Thank you so much for coming.ā
Jared was standing behind her and gave a small wave, āHey, Marn.ā He looked exactly like the video. We exchanged a brief hug. Iām not sure if everyone else over-analyzes every single social interaction theyāre in, but I was very cognizant of not letting that hug linger. A
professional hug. Jenny chimed in.
āI love your videos!ā Jennyās enthusiasm seemed genuine. āAfter uh, all
this started happening, I went deep down the YouTube rabbit hole. Thereās a lot of stuff out there, but your videos made me feel sane.ā
āYeah, I came into the room and saw you on the TV. I was like, whoa, I dated her in college!ā Jared added.
āI didnāt believe him at first, but he had proof!ā Jenny gave him a playful smack on the arm.
āEvidence is important.ā
Jenny laughed at Jaredās terrible cop joke. I could see why he liked her, Jennyās sunny disposition was infectious. In comparison, Jared and I were two people with very dry senses of humour.
We exchanged pleasantries, and the couple helped me bring my bags into the guest room. Jared gave me something of a tour of the home. Having studied their surveillance footage in detail, I had no issue navigating their home. It was easy to forget I hadnāt been here before. When we got to the kitchen, I made a mental note of the ceiling. Adorned with several wooden beams, perfect for stringing up wires to say, make a spoon dance in the air. Interesting.
Walking down the hallway to the master bedroom, and nursery, Jared pointed out a small blind spot in the cameras. I made a note to place one of my cameras there to cover that gap. While the knocks occurred in different locations each night, the main hallway was where the most activity occurred. I decided that this would be a good spot for my thermal camera, a piece of equipment Iāve owned for several years but never had a good excuse to use. According to the lore, ghosts can affect temperature. I guess weāll see.
As Jared showed me the nursery, he explained that Simon would be staying at his sister-in-laws for the foreseeable future. I had hoped to take a look at his bruises, but this didnāt feel like the time to mention Simonās injuries, or the Shadow Man. Jennyās expression darkened, and she brought it up without my prompting.
āAfter Jared showed meā¦ā her voice quavered. She paused before collecting herself. ā...The video, I didnāt feel safe having him here any more. We visit him every day.ā
Jennyās eyes welled up, and she excused herself. Left alone with Jared for the first time, there was an awkward pause. Wanting to avoid awkwardness at all costs, I asked Jared if he could do me a favour: Stand where the Shadow Man stood, and imitate his movements. For scale, I told him, and that was true. If Jaredās measurements match the Shadow Man, thereās a good chance he faked the footage, either with CGI or some sort of lighting rig. Jared seemed surprised, but he complied. I think he understood where I was going with this.
I grappled with my emotions versus my logic. On one hand, this āghostā should have a rational explanation, and the most rational explanation was that this was a hoax. On the other hand, Jaredās wife is crying because she doesnāt feel like her child is safe in her home. If this is a prank, to what end? My relationship with Jared ended amicably. Hell, he was the one who ended it. It didnāt make sense. None of it did.
After playing Shadow Man charades, I inquired about Jaredās security system. I wanted to see how he viewed surveillance footage. Jared darted into the bedroom and grabbed his laptop, a Macbook that was several years old. His security cameras uploaded over wi-fi to the cloud, and he was able to access that footage via an app. This app deletes the videos after a period of time, so Jared had been downloading them onto his computer. I noted he had several external hard drives, video files take up a lot of space so this made sense. I asked if I could borrow his laptop for a moment.
āSure, do whatever you want.ā Jared handed me the laptop, which I took into the guest bedroom where I was staying. I took this opportunity to see if his computer had any visual effects, or video editing apps. All he had was iMovie, not a particularly powerful option.
I spent a few hours reviewing the laptop, and then editing some B-roll footage I had shot earlier on my own computer. Jared knocked on the door. I looked up to see him in full police gear, and he let me know he was going to work. After Jared left, Jenny poked her head in the doorway and asked if Iād like to go out for dinner tonight, just the two of us. I agreed. All I had eaten was sickening ferry-food for breakfast, and Jenny seemed nice enough.
The Dinner
Jenny drove us to this amazing little Italian restaurant, and we had a fantastic time! She pushed many appetisers on me (so much bread), and the main course was delicious. I had linguine pescatora, and Jenny had gnocchi. Jenny had one glass, and I had the rest of the wine bottle. The dinner was a little awkward at first, but by the end of the night we felt like old friends. For Jennyās sake, I wonāt discuss every single thing she told me, but here are the relevant bits:
I previously described Jenny as a seamstress. While that is true, itās under-selling what she does. Jenny knows some specific, technical dress-making techniques. She has her own business, targeted towards Renaissance Fairs and cosplayers. Her work eventually attracted the attention of Hollywood productions. Now she makes beautiful clothing for feature films (period pieces), and high-end clients. I wondered how she and Jared could afford their beautiful home, she appears to be the reason.
Jared and Jenny met a little over 3 years ago. Jared was a few years out of the academy, and got stationed in their small town. By coincidence, he had moved into her apartment building. They struck up a conversation one day when Jared offered to help her haul several bags of dresses to her car. She liked him, and asked him out for coffee. They married two years later, and she got pregnant with Simon around that time.
At one point later in the evening, we got onto the subject of ghosts. Jennyās always been a spiritual person, her office is full of crystals, and she loves astrology. I also learned she believes she saw a ghost as a child. As she describes it, she was in bed and a bearded old man in a white three-piece suit appeared in the room. He loomed over her with an intense stare, and they locked eyes for a long time. Jenny rolled to her side, and when she looked back he was gone. I asked if she ever saw the man again, and she answered no. I spoke to her about the phenomena of sleep paralysis, and she conceded that was possible. Iām not sure if she believed that or not. Regardless, I could see myself being good friends with Jenny.
Night One
We had such a lovely time at dinner, my reason for visiting had all but slipped my mind. It wasnāt until our drive home that I realised we were heading back to (for all intents and purposes) a haunted house. A pit began to form in my stomach as we pulled into the driveway. At night, the house took on an eerie presence, and the surrounding woods had me feeling like something could leap out at me at any moment. Jenny must have been feeling the same way, as we hurried into the house. Jared still wasnāt back yet, as he worked 12 hour shifts.
I asked Jenny if she wanted to help me set up some of my equipment before bed, and her expression darkened. She declined. She opened up a drawer and pulled out a massive bag of earplugs, offering me some. This seems to be her solution to the nightly knocking sounds. I took some earplugs, though I forgot them on the counter. I got to work setting up my cameras and audio recording devices. I placed one of my cameras to cover the blind spot Jared showed me, and set the thermal camera in the main hallway. I was more than a little tipsy, but I managed to get the job done. After triple-checking that everything was recording, I shuffled back to the guest bedroom to sleep. It was around 10:30 pm, and I was dead tired, but knowing why I was there, I set an alarm for 3:15 am, hoping to be awake for the knocks.
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP! I shut the alarm off, and groaned. I barely registered falling asleep. It was one of those sleeps where it feels like youāve blinked, and all of a sudden itās several hours later. Awful. I grabbed my phone, pulled myself out of bed, and left my room. I checked the time, 3:20 am. I shuffled into the main hallway, and waited. The minutes felt like an eternity as I stood around, waiting for a noise. It was dead quiet. Impatient, I found myself checking my phone. While waiting for a ghostly knocking. Something must be wrong with my brain. As my phoneās clock read 3:23, I put my phone away and listened.
I couldnāt hear any footfalls, or doors opening. No strange noises from the plumbing or AC units. As I lingered in the silence, I wondered if this would be the night when the noises stopped. Did I scare the ghost away?
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG ! BANG! I screamed, startled by the incredible volume of noise that surrounded me. It felt like the banging was right beside my head, as if the very walls were screaming at me. Then it started again.
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG ! BANG! I whirled around, searching for a source to this thunderous sound. No such source was obvious to me. Jared came out of the bedroom in his pyjamas, and stared at me for a moment. As if to say,
āTold you soā, but no lecture came. If anything, he looked sad. Disheartened that this horrible noise was real, not some sort of shared hallucination. He took a step towards me.
āOh my godā¦ā Was all that came out of my mouth.
āLetās talk in the morning.ā Jared said, shivering a little before heading back to bed. Itās clear he's used to this, but my heart was pounding out of my chest. After a pause, I followed suit, and returned to the guest bedroom. It took a long time to fall back asleep after that. I wished I took Jenny up on her offer of earplugs.
Reviewing the Evidence
I awoke around 8:30 to a gentle knock on my door, and an offer I couldnāt refuse.
āThereās fresh coffee, if you want some.ā Jenny announced. God yes.
As I sat down for coffee, nectar of the gods, I couldnāt help but focus on the empty high chair at the kitchen table. There wasnāt much conversation in the morning, but Jenny did tell me she was spending the day at her sisterās with Simon. Later Jared would go there after work to spend the night with him. My heart hurts for them. As Jenny left, Jared encouraged me to check my footage from last night. He did the same with his security system.
I scrubbed through my three audio recordings. The ear-shattering knocks were definitely coming from the main hallway. I marked down where I was standing on my sound map. I checked my blind spot camera, and scrubbed through the nightās events. Nothing of note until I enter the hallway at 3:20, stare at my phone and then jump into the air at the sound of the knocks. As I finished up with this, Jared came into the room. He told me there wasnāt anything noteworthy on his cameras, just the knocks, but he would send me the footage to review. He was about to leave the room, when I asked him if he wanted to stick around to watch the thermal camera footage with me. I opened up the video file.
The thermal camera was pointing straight down the main hallway, now visible in various shades of orange, and purple. The walls were brighter than the doorways, and the lights appeared brightest. I scrubbed through the hours of footage. It captured Jared going into the bedroom around 12:35 am, having finished work at midnight. As the timestamp hits 3:20, I come into frame, my skin orange, and my hair and clothes closer to purple. I watch myself pull out my phone, and I shoot an awkward smile at Jared, who seems unphased. At 3:23, right before the knocking sound, a dark blue spot appears on the floor in front of me.
The dark blue mass starts rising, getting taller and taller until it looms over me. The deep blue shape becomes humanoid.
āWhat the fuck?ā Jared interjects over my shoulder.
At exactly 3:24, I jump at the knocks, and the man-shape follows my movement. It doesnāt have a face, but I can tell that itāsā¦
staring at me. In the video, Jared comes out of the bedroom. The blue mass is still in front of him, but you can see the blue colour turn closer to purple as Jared stands behind it.
As Jared takes a step forward, he walks right through the mass. He shivers, affected by the temperature difference, before he walks back into the room. As I exit the hallway, the mass ālooksā at me, itsā featureless head tilting in my direction.
It just stands there. I scrub forward several hours. A distinct man shape, motionless. Itās not until 6 am, when Jenny comes out of the bedroom, that the figure drops back down into the floor. The temperature readings become normal again. The video ends a few hours later, when I come to collect the cameraās memory card.
Jared and I stared at each other for a moment. He collected himself.
āSo, in your professional opinion, what, uh⦠what the hell was that?ā
āIn my professional opinion?ā He nodded.
āJared,ā I stated. āYour house is fucking haunted.ā

2023.03.30 00:18 ThrowRASpiritualKiwi How should my boyfriend (M22) and I (F29) split the expenses/efforts when dating?
My boyfriend and I live not too close to each other. I have a car, while he doesn't drive, so I'm usually the one driving to his city, which takes me about 1h30min by car, even though with the tolls and the diesel, the car travel is more expensive to me than riding the train is for him. He has come to my village by train before, which takes him about 1h30 by train (I drive from my house to the train station to meet him there), but it's usually me driving to his city since I have a car. I absolutely hate driving and I only do it all the time when going out with him to make his life easier.
He knows I hate driving, even though I never complained about driving when it's to meet him, but I've complained about driving in general, so he told me "well, you could take the train too when coming here... I've also done it before. It's not a problem, you must prefer the car"... But if I take the train, it will take me much longer (2h30min) than when he takes the train (since I don't live by the train station unlike him and I'd have to go from my house to the train station by foot while he only ever goes to the train station here, not to my house which is further away). Still, I told him it's a good point and that I can do it, but then he would have to be understanding that it would take me longer to arrive and that I would have to leave sooner (public transportation doesn't work past midnight here and, even so, I don't feel safe riding the train so late - he never rides the train so late either), besides the fact he would have to ride the train to my village too sometimes, otherwise it wouldn't be fair if it was always me. Because of this, we agreed on keeping things as they were (AKA me driving to his city).
While in my village the parking is free, I always pay around 10 euros for parking when I go there during the week (there is free parking during the weekends close to his place, so I usually stay at his place on the weekends). I'm also usually the one who pays for our meals, I guess it became a habit since I wanted to pay on the first dates to show my interest and appreciation for him. I never complained about paying for his meals to him, since my salary is higher than his by 100-150 euros, depending on the month, plus his house rent is higher than mine as well. But now I feel it's being a bit expensive and draining (since I hate driving) and he doesn't seem to want to share the expenses of it all equally, especially the car-related ones (at least the parking costs to meet him and the tolls when I drive him around). He doesn't want to take his driving license because he says he doesn't need it, since he lives in a city with a subway, but then he asks me for rides when I'm there and when we go out of the city.
My family also thinks I should be the one paying for everything, since I make more money, but we're not even married, so it's MY money that I work hard to make and that I started making later in life than him (because I had to undergo many years of studies) and I don't even know if he will want to break up with me in the future, which would suck... I've dated one guy before him, even if only for a short period of time, who made almost 1000 euros more than me and we still split the expenses of everything 50/50 and I felt it was right at the time.
I've complained about the costs to my current boyfriend before and he says he agrees and that he understands, but that's it. I love him very much and I don't want him to think that I've changed (we've been dating for 9 months now) or that I'm being greedy/selfish... So I want to know if anyone else has/had this kind of issue, how did you approach it and how did you find the best solution?

2023.03.30 00:15 wbxlol Water shut off after 30 days?
We forgot to pay our water bill that was due February 28 and our water got shut off today. Can they legally do that? I thought because of the "Water Shutoff Protection Act" they couldn't shut it off until 60 days after the due date. I live in the city of orange that matters.

2023.03.29 23:08 Michael_Whitehouse The Pale Figures in the Woods Destroyed My Life. If You See Them, Run!
I've always tried to rationally think through how we got here. What happened to lead us down this path? Why did life turn out like this? When I do, my mind always comes back to that summer's day in Scotland. Everything stems from that like a collapsed vein; a happier time cut off from us in the past, and nowhere else to go but this tainted present.
Back in 1977, my wife, Jenna, and I saw something neither of us could comprehend. It changed us forever.
We were staying in a small Scottish village called Aberfoyle for a week at the time. It was a quaint place, surrounded by pleasant rolling hills, woodland, and lochs. From our hotel, we could explore the lush Scottish scenery, something Jenna had wanted to do since she was a kid. Her mother was Scottish, and although she had passed away when my wife was very young, Jenna always felt a deep connection to the country. It was a spiritual home of sorts.
She was fascinated by it. The vast spaces of green and rock. Clear blue waters, snow, rain, wind, and sun piercing through it, if you were lucky. It was the natural world in its element. Most of all, Jenna cherished the few memories she had of her mother telling stories about Scotland. It was a mystical place for her and her family, and that pull to see it first-hand only grew over the years.
I had spent my childhood in a small town in the Midwest. I'd had my fill of nature and preferred the streets of Boston as an adult, but when my wife turned 30, I knew that a trip across the Atlantic would make the perfect present. When I told her where we were going, she was so happy.
Aberfoyle village was barely more than a main street at the time, with our hotel - well, I say, 'hotel', but it was more of a bed and breakfast - sitting on one of the rare, empty backstreets. At night the place shut down except for a solitary pub, leaving us to breathe in the relative silence and darkness of the surrounding hills and forests.
The first night there we had dinner at a small restaurant. That night brought more than its fair share of surprises. The first was when I surprised Jenna with a silver bracelet engraved with a suitably soppy message on the underside. But that wasn't where the unexpected ceased. Jenna then dropped the biggest surprise of all - she was pregnant with our first child.
We had been trying for over a year and we were beginning to worry that something was wrong, and so to hear that she was pregnant was overwhelming. We celebrated - Jenna on the orange juice, me on the Scotch.
The next day, my head was pounding and I asked that we stay closer to the hotel rather than have our planned trip to Glasgow City. Jenna was a little put out, but by lunchtime, my headache had lifted a little and I suggested a walk through the countryside as a compromise. The night before, one of the locals had told me about a scenic walk through Queen Elizabeth Forest. It sounded perfect, and just a short drive away. If I had to hurl, at least I wouldn't be doing it in front of other people.
Jenna was excited to get out and about, and so we drove for about twenty minutes from Aberfoyle and parked in a small makeshift parking lot inside the forest. This was the place the trails started, and they could only be explored on foot. When we got out, the scent of pines was sweet in the air and the fresh smell made me feel much better.
Although I've been told the location is now more popular, on that day we saw no other cars on the road into the forest, and the parking lot itself was empty. The sun was high in the sky, and as we headed on foot towards what was supposed to be a relaxing forest walk, I remember smiling at Jenna. She was so beautiful.
A wooden information board showed us the route we were to take. Given her condition, I didn't want Jenna to overexert herself, so we took the path marked in green, which meant it should have been the easiest trail.
And it was, for a while. The path moved through pockets of pine trees and had clearly been used many times before. It was picturesque, and with each step, I started to understand why Jenna had been so happy to visit the place. There's undoubtedly something necessary about getting away from the world to lose yourself in nature. It's like we still have an ancient part of ourselves that gets nourished by the deep greenery.
As we strolled along the dirt path, we started talking about what we would call the baby if it were a boy or a girl. It was then that we realized we were not alone. In front of us in the distance, a young boy walked out from the tree line and stood on the path ahead about 50 yards away, just staring at us. He looked to be about 8 or 9 years old. Being in an isolated area, it would have been unnerving to begin with, but what immediately filled me with disbelief was the fact that the boy was clearly naked.
The sun reflected off of his skin, and his pale colour was stark against the green of the forest. What do you do in a situation like that? This was in the 1970s and, although there were always whispers of terrible things happening behind closed doors, it was long before the public truly accepted that many children were being abused or mistreated.
Still, the unsettling sight was soon replaced with concern for the child. Jenna picked up the pace and shouted 'hello', but something immediately made me grab her hand and stop her from running up to the boy.
I asked Jenna to stay put, not just for herself but for our unborn child's sake. The last thing I wanted was for a stressful situation to affect the pregnancy. Reluctantly, she stayed where she was and I stepped forward towards the boy.
As I drew closer, I realized just how pale and emaciated he was, as though he had been kept somewhere, malnourished and away from sunlight for some time.
'Are you okay?' I asked. 'Where are your parents?'
He just looked at me, the skin beneath his eyes darker than the surrounding skin. Cautiously, I moved closer with my arms open so as not to scare him. 'Let us help you. Maybe we could take you to the police or help you find your parents?'
The closer I got, the more I felt the uncertainty of the situation. There was something very wrong with the boy. I expected him to move back or show some sort of fear, but he didn't. In fact, I was sure that a subtle grin momentarily flickered across his face before returning to the same, sombre expression as before.
By this time, I was standing straight in front of him.
I asked him: 'What's your name?'
Again, he said nothing, but now he was looking intently into my eyes, and that gaze carried with it nothing but menace.
The boy then reached out his right hand and touched the centre of my chest. The touch of his fingers left me unsure of myself. I turned to look back at Jenna down the path to ask her what I should do. As I turned, I heard a rustling sound and when I looked back towards the boy, he was no longer there.
I followed the rustling to the side of the path. The ground dipped down into a slight incline. There, the trees and bushes created thick clumps of leaves and branches. It looked difficult to traverse, and I thought that the boy's naked skin must have been scraped and cut to pieces running about in there. It was so dim between the trees; a tangled green mess.
Waiting for a moment, I listened. There was nothing other than the occasional creak of a branch swaying in the gentle breeze. Above, the sun shone down directly onto the path, but just a few steps forward and I would have been engulfed by the dark of the forest. The difference in light was stark in my mind, and although I wanted to help the kid, everything about the situation left me in a wary state of mind.
Seeing no sign of the boy, I walked back to Jenna. She asked where he was. I said I didn't know and told her that he'd disappeared into the forest when my back was turned. Jenna looked pale, and she gave me a look I knew only too well. I'd seen it a few times over the previous few years - something was on her mind and she just had to get it out.
Jenna looked me straight in the eyes and said: 'I never saw the boy leave the path.'
She insisted that it was as if he had just vanished. One moment he was there, the next he was gone. I was caught in a difficult situation. This was long before the common cell phone. One of us needed to alert the authorities that there was a young boy stranded in the woods, running around as naked as the day he was born.
Considering how deep and thick the section of forest around us was, he could easily have fallen and hit his head on a rock or, later, died of hypothermia when the night came. There was only one thing we could do: One of us would have to stay put in case the kid needed help, while the other would walk back to the car, drive into Aberfoyle, and raise the alarm.
There was no question that I would stay in the forest, but I didn't feel right about letting Jenna go back to the car by herself. Even if she hadn't been pregnant, I wouldn't have liked it. But, Jenna was always stronger-willed than me, and although I would try to pull the usual 'strong husband' routine common at the time, she was nearly always immune to it.
Jenna insisted that she would head back down the path and that I should try and find the kid, but not stray too far. She would be back as soon as possible with help. I told her to honk the horn when she was leaving the parking lot, that way I'd know she'd got back to the car okay. I got a smile and a roll of the eyes in return, but she promised to do it if it made me feel better. She gave me a kiss on the cheek and walked back the way we had come. I watched her until she disappeared from view.
Although I'd spent the last 10 years living in Boston, I grew up in the Midwest, so hikes through the woods were not alien to me - but this was different. There was something off about that long stretch of path. It was flanked by pine trees so close together that the forest was as dark as twilight once you stepped off the path and into it - and that was something I had no intention of doing.
The tree line was like an impenetrable wall to me. Nonetheless, I stared intently at it in search of the smallest sign of life. I was sure that since I hadn't heard anyone moving around in there, the boy must still have been near. He would have made too much noise moving through the uneven and cluttered terrain.
There was a sense of loneliness about that place. No... Not loneliness, but isolation. Like it was an arm cut from the body of the world. Such environments infect the mind with paranoia, and as I was entertaining the stark atmosphere of the place, I kept my eyes on the side of the path from where the boy had first appeared.
My imagination took over. I began to think about the kid, lost in the woods. I thought about how he'd gotten into such a situation. And those thoughts were too dark to dwell on. I turned my mind to a lighter explanation. Maybe there was a loch nearby and he was swimming there with his friends, I thought. They took his clothes as a prank and then he'd followed the path trying to get back to town.
Yes, that made sense. It must have been something like that. But why did he not speak to me? And what of his skin: It was unusually pale, and that flicker of a smile on his face, it-+ caused me doubt just to think about it.
Continuing my vigil, I wondered why Jenna hadn't honked the car horn yet as she left the parking lot. I was sure she should have made it back there by then. That's when I thought I saw movement. I didn't know if it was a deer or the missing boy himself.
Slowly, I stepped forward to the edge of the path and peered in. The quiet of the place took over, and I stared steadily for any hint of movement. I was so focused that I had no time to react to the real danger. Something walked out of the woods from behind me at speed. I barely had a moment to turn, and when I did, something large and white put its hands on me.
It knocked me from the path, and as I fell down the incline into the trees and bushes in front, a searing pain cut across my vision. A branch of pine needles scratched across my left eyeball leaving me unable to see out of it.
Instinct kicked in and I fled deeper between the trees, the branches cracking and prodding around me as I did so. Blood and tears oozed from my injured left eye, and as I looked back momentarily with my right, I saw, standing on the sunlit path, two people. A man and a woman. Both were naked, and their skin was as white as the boy's I had seen, gleaming in the summer sun.
Both figures stepped forward towards where I was, and I quickly attempted to hide within the cutting embrace of a large pine tree, but it was clear that they could see me somehow. It was at that moment that I heard the distant sound of a car horn. A sense of relief cut through my adrenaline. I could at least be happy that Jenna had made it back to the car without incident. Hopefully out of the forest and away from my attackers.
The man and woman stared at me through the trees, their gaze dark and malevolent. Angry even. When he and the woman moved towards where I stood, I panicked and picked up a moss-covered rock on the ground at my feet. It was the only way to protect myself.
I watched, anticipating their movements, waiting for them to attack. The woman spoke to the man, and her words were unlike any I had heard before. It wasn't just the language that confused me, but I'm uncertain how any human could make such a sound. Beneath the words, there was an unusual noise. Each word lay on top of a breath, like a storm swelling and pushing through a constricted space. The man answered with a lower, yet equally airy voice.
There we were, waiting. I might not have understood the language, but I knew they meant to harm me, and for the first time the thought that I might never leave that forest alive rose up in my mind.
Just as the man finally lurched towards where I was, my heart began to race. If the sound of Jenna striking our car horn had made me feel more at ease, the second time it sounded put me on edge. When the horn sounded for a third, and then a final fourth time, I knew something terrible had happened. Jenna needed help.
There was no time for dialogue. These people, whoever they were, had undoubtedly hurt that boy we had encountered, and now they were hell-bent on hurting me and my wife. Who knew how many of them there were? I had to get back to Jenna to make sure she was okay.
The man continued moving forward, the pine branches breaking against his skin. When he reached me, I leapt forward and swung the rock in my hand with all of my might. When it contacted his head, I was certain I had killed him. Something cracked inside his skull. I felt it. Blood sprayed across me, and he staggered back onto the trail.
I will never forget the piercing, inhuman scream the woman let out when she leaned over to help her bloodied companion. The man's pale white face had come apart from the attack, his features now a flap of skin hanging from the side of his head.
The woman stood up to come at me, and shocked at what I had done, I ran back down the path. Looking back with my one good eye, I could see that she was still with the man's crumpled body, and so I focused purely on reaching Jenna.
When I got to the parking lot, I wasn't sure what I saw at first. The car door was open and Jenna was lying in the driver's seat. A small, pale white figure was hunched over her, doing something.
As I ran to the car, the figure, who I could now see was the boy we had first encountered, let out a screech, and held a bloody mess in his hands. I was too late. The boy scampered off towards the surrounding forest, but as he reached the tall grass just before the tree line, he stopped. Crouching down, he turned and stared at me, his white skin bleached red with my wife's blood.
I didn't care if I was going to die. I took a deep breath and turned to look at what he had done to my wife. She was sitting in the driver's seat, her eyes glazed, but I didn't understand. She was looking at me in a daze, smiling.
There was no blood. No visible wound that I could see.
'I dreamt about our child,' she said. Then she lost consciousness.
I pulled her still-breathing body out of the driver's seat and lay her gently in the back. She was talking to herself, mumbling something, as though she were in a deep, confusing dream.
My only thought was to get her to a hospital. Climbing into the car, I slammed the doors shut. All the while the boy covered in blood, nestling something in his hands, stared at me from the tall grass. But he was no longer alone. The man and woman I had encountered on the path were with him, and the man, though he bore a scar down the side of his cheek, looked as though his entire face had been sewed back on.
They watched silently as I drove out of the parking lot, and I was left with the uneasy feeling that they allowed me to leave.
Jenna recovered in a local hospital, and to my complete surprise and joy, our baby was still alive and healthy inside of its mother. We spoke with the local police. Of course, no one believed us, and why would they? There wasn't a scratch on Jenna, and bizarrely, even the blood which had sprayed across me during my fight on the forest path had vanished like disappearing ink.
When I asked Jenna about what happened at the parking lot, she said all she remembered was a flash of white on the windscreen, as if something had jumped up on the hood of the car. Then, nothing. But she did say she dreamed about a crying baby.
Months later, when we were back in Boston, Jenna gave birth to our son. He was beautiful. We were happy... For a few days. To our horror, just a short while after getting him home, his skin began to change colour, like food going bad because of the air. His skin darkened as he cried for his life. I called 911, but it was too late.
He stopped breathing in Jenna's arms. We were overcome with grief I can't describe, looking down at our beautiful boy, his skin now the colour of mould, his eyes frozen open looking up at us.
We heard the paramedics come into our home downstairs, but before they reached us, the miraculous happened. Suddenly, our son began breathing again. His eyes rolled around, and then his skin began to change colour back to its original healthy tone. But the change did not stop, it grew paler and paler, until there was no doubt that we were staring at one of the children of the forest.
Before our very eyes, and I will swear this until my dying breath, our son then began to fade away, just as the blood had evaporated on my clothes. As the last outline of him vanished, he let out the laugh of a child far older than his few days. That laugh moved off into the air and out through the nearest window, fading to nothing.
If it wasn't for the paramedics, who saw the last moment themselves, the police would have thought we disposed of our own child. We didn't. He was never our child to begin with. He was of the forest, and I'm certain that's where he now lives. Lost in a sea of green.
And what of our own unborn child? Was he taken from Jenna's body at the forest? Is it possible he lives there too? That possibility haunts me, as do these memories I've finally put into words.
Jenna and I remain married, though we swore after that day never to have another child. Perhaps the effects of what we encountered in that forest still linger in her body. Who knows what we would have brought into this world?

2023.03.29 22:55 SirPiecemaker You are a budget mage. While most of your colleagues use costly ingredients, rituals that take weeks to prepare and use a new spell for every problem, you only know a few spells, use common household ingredients and prepare rituals within minutes. They unjustly deride your work as shoddy.
She had seen mages before when she went to sell her embroidery in the city centre. They would put on grand displays of magical wonder. She had seen them appear in a puff of colourful smoke, pull crystals out of thin air and turn them into soft, gentle rain, and bestow good fortune and prosperity on the discerning audience while the masses watched from afar.
The issue is that those mages stayed in the nice parts of town, in the luxurious highrise apartments paid for by their wealthy clients. Displays such as those would cost more than her entire hab-block, took entire squadrons of servants weeks of meticulous preparations and were reserved only for the rich and powerful who could supply the mages with crystallized mana and freshly ground stardust. The less fortunate folks, well, they were on their own.
But there are some issues that can't be fixed with hard work and grit. There are issues that need magic. If a tulpa - a thought form made manifest - starts terrorizing a district, magic is the only answer. The fair and noble mages wouldn't dream of coming down to the dirty parts of town. The only option left was the man who just walked through her front door.
The best word to describe him would be 'dishevelled'. He had a 5 o'clock shadow, a long, crumpled up trenchcoat and threw away his cigarette just seconds before walking in. Proper mages were never seen smoking anything except the finest of cigars, not budget-brand coffin nails. Still, he barged in with the swagger she wasn't entirely sure he could afford.
"Where is she?" he asked quickly, not even bothering with proper etiquette. The woman, her eyes red from fatigue and tears, clutching a handkerchief, pointed towards a nearby room. The man quickly paced in, finding a girl, no more than 10 years, laying in bed, gripped by a terrible fever. He touched her forehead to measure her temperature and opened one of her eyes, inspecting it.
"Is... is she going to live?" the woman asked with a shaky voice. The man turned and gave her a sly grin.
"Dontcha worry love, I got you covered. Now, get us a toothbrush and some baking soda, would ya?"
The woman wasted no time and rushed to gather the required materials. When she came back, she found the man removed his trenchcoat and started rolling up his sleeves.
"Grand," he said and took the toothbrush, dipping it in the baking soda until it was completely covered in the white powder. He forced the girl's mouth opened and ran the toothbrush on her teeth. Despite the terrible taste, the girl was far too weak to protest. The man removed the toothbrush and laid it on the ground, surrounding it by the rest of the soda.
"Now," he said resolutely, "you got any beer? Moonshine? Any alcohol? Stronger the better."
The woman once again rushed to grab the necessary ingredient.
"This... this is a bottle of plum brandy one of our neighbours makes. It's cheap, but will it do?"
The man grabbed it and sniffed the contents, his nose hairs almost burning as he did. Whatever it was, it was strong.
"Aye, that'll do," he said and started downing the entire thing. The woman's heart sank - this man was nothing but a drunk with a flair for theatrics. He downed almost half of the entire bottle before he finally set it aside.
"Nnoow... blimey, whatss... in diss shite? Kno- knockd me... on my arse..." he said, his speech already slurred from the hard alcohol. He started uttering some words in a hushed tone, too quiet for the woman to hear, before pulling a lighter from his pocket and setting the toothbrush on fire. It flared with a blue flame far greater than anyone would expect. He kept holding it and uttering his words until almost all of it burned away, the putrid smell of singed plastic filling the words.
He suddenly yelled out several odd words the woman did not recognize. The toothbrush burst into one last blaze before it went out completely and the fire dissipated.
The man sat back down on the ground, breathing heavily. The woman watched on quietly until her attention was grabbed by her daughter coughing up the baking soda, now turned black, and opened her eyes.
"Mum?" she said slowly; the first time she spoke in over a week. The woman rushed to her bedside and inspected her eyes, her forehead, and her mouth. The fever was gone entirely, her eyes no longer bloodshot, the only thing that seemed to bother her was the gross taste of baking soda in her mouth. The woman hugged her tightly before turning back to the mage, still sat on the ground, clutching his head.
"Th- thank you!" she said. "Are- are you well?"
"Aye, dontcha worry love," he said with a pained expression before taking another, small swig of the brandy. Despite this, his speech was no longer slurred, his movements precise - unlike what he looked like when he downed half the bottle. "This kinda shite sobers you up proper, so if you're not actually drunk, well..."
"Then what?" the woman inquired.
"You'll get an aneurysm," he chuckled.
"Is... the monster gone?" she continued in a shaky voice.
"Naw," he said and stood up, grabbing his trenchcoat. "Just broke the bastard's grip on the lass," he said and gave the girl a quick pat on the head. "The bloody thing is still around, lurking, pissed that I just took away its meal," he said and put a cigarette in his mouth. Noticing the woman's concerned expression, his eyes went to the girl again and he slowly took the cigarette out of his mouth and put it behind his ear.
"Need to talk to the block's elder to get the bugger sorted out. Can you take me to him?"
"Of course, but... can it wait for just a few moments? I- I need to tend to Isabella, make sure she is well."
The man offered a smile. "Sure thing love. I'll be outside. Dying for a smoke anyway."
And with those words, the dishevelled, scruffy mage left, leaving behind only a faint smell of cigarettes and plum brandy.

2023.03.29 22:29 TimeTwister14 WIBTAH if I told my inlaws it was rude of them to have us visit while their house is under construction?
My wife and I (both late 30s) are currently visiting her parents. Her parents are snow birds and spend the winters at their house in the south.
Their house isn't very big. It's three bedrooms. A really large master, a large guest bedroom, and a small third bedroom that is my FIL's office.
In planning the trip back in Nov/Dec, the MIL told me about their plans to convert part of their patio into a fourth bedroom that would be FILs new office. The current third bedroom would be getting bunk beds. This sounded great because I have two young school aged kids. The third bedroom could be theirs, leaving my wife and I to the large guest room.
My inlaws paid for the flights which was a Wednesday morning flight to the next Thursday. My kids missed three days of school. I couldn't get 8 days off work so I had to work remotely Thursday/Friday. I asked my wife to confirm with the inlaws if there was space and whatnot to work and they said yes.
Prior to the trip my inlaws did a video chat and showed my kids the new bunk beds and everyone was excited.
Then we get here to find that the patio construction has barely started. The demo had just been done the days before we arrived. There have been construction workers here every weekday from 7am to 5/6 pm. It's been constant banging and noise. The workers also have access to the house and are frequently coming in and using the bathroom. One of them accidentally walked in on my daughter using the bathroom.
Overall I am annoyed and pissed that they scheduled this construction to coincide with our visit. The constant noise is terrible. Not only that but my FIL keeps making mocking jokes about it. "These guys start early, No sleeping in here!".... hilarious.
I couldn't work at all and ended up renting an flex office space for the two days I needed to work for.
Beyond that, the entire backyard outside area of their house unavailable to use. The pool is covered because of the construction. There's loose nails, screws, and materials everywhere. Not to mention literally construction going on all day. So no pool, patio, or even a place to sit outside. Instead of more space like I was led to believe, there is much less, random construction workers, endless noise, and a dusty/dirty house.
The house is in a golf community and there really isn't much to do here besides hang out at the house. The city is in the middle of no where with no child activities or anything like that. We usually spend our time here hanging out, grilling (no grill available because of construction), using the pool.
On the one hand they did pay for our flights (janky flight days that caused missed school despite knowing what days spring break was).
On the other hand there's no way they would have scheduled this construction to coincide with any of their fancy friends coming to visit, but have no problem shitting on us.
So would I be the asshole if I told them it was rude to have us here while their house is under construction?

2023.03.29 21:36 StatisticianBookworm Dazzle dry for nails?
My friend in another city was telling me her salon does something called "Dazzle Dry" polish for nails. No UV light, no dip powder and can be removed with regular polish. She said she could go a full 10 days without chipping. Does anyone know of any Richmond salons that offer this?
