East Coast Ranger here. I know Rangers typically are thought of as armed LE patrolling BIG forests and mountains. However, there have been multiple Urban Park Rangers programs started recently in the U.S. in dense urban settings where civilians take the job and then take on a more of an "enforcement standpoint." Voluntary compliance as you all know.... without being an official sworn officer. I've been seeing more of these pop up recently. Burlington, VT, Boulder, CO, Salt Lake City, UT, Santa Monica, CA, Denver, CO. NYC, NY, Phoenix, AZ., Bakersfield, CA, Honolulu, HI., Seattle, WA
Duty belts can include: baton, pepper spray, radio, Naloxone, multi-tool, with a ticket book. They may or may not be close with the local police. From my own personal experience, the police have been pretty distant local park rangers in my city. We don't even carry a radio, rather phones, when we work in a city of 50k.
Non federal, non-state. Working for municipalities. Working a lot with the homeless. I mean a lot....
Are there any individuals who are part of this? I would love to hear ur thoughts.
TLDR: Urban Park Rangers: are you one, or ever thought of becoming one?
