2023.06.01 21:50 RainbowSupernova8196 Hell's Kitchen Season 12- Episode 1
Intro: 18 new aspiring chefs arrive at Hell's Kitchen with aspirations of winning an executive chef spot at Gordon Ramsay Steak in Baltimore, Maryland. They arrive on a tour bus, only to find out Hell's Kitchen is locked. They are then greeted by Chef Ramsay lookalike Martin Jordan, who unlocks the door for them. They are then greeted by the Real Chef Ramsay at the door after he calls out to them from an intercom in the entrance. He then tells them to make their signature dishes. At the same time, there are drapes set over the pass, as to obscure the chef's view as Ramsay sets up the seats for the crowd.
Theme Song Plays (intro is themed like a live stage play)
Signature Dish Challenge:
First Pairing: Kelsie and Glenn.
Both score a point. 1-1 tie.
Second Pairing: Trish and Giancarlo.
Trish scores. 2-1 Red.
Third pairing: Akira and Bryce.
Bryce scores. 2-2 tie.
Fourth Pairing: Martina and Gordon aka Don.
Neither score. 2-2 tie.
Fifth Pairing: Norma and Maurice.
Maurice scores. 3-2 Blue.
Sixth Pairing: Candace and James.
Both score. 4-3 Blue.
Seventh Pairing: Maddie and Erik.
Neither score. 4-3 Blue.
Eighth Pairing: Bella and Dylan.
Bella scores. 4-4 tie.
Ninth Pairing: Lauryn and Tyrone.
Tyrone scores. Blue wins 5-4.
Reward: The Blue Team is brought to Catalina Island and eat lunch at LA Market with Nona from Season 8.
Punishment: The Red Team are forced to disassemble the seats and the stage and load up the parts into a truck outside.
Before service: While the Red and Blue teams are prepping, Erik gets a high fever and is forced to leave the competition. He is missed by the Blue Team.
During service: The Blue Team gets off to a flying start and makes it to entrées 15 minutes into service. But not without an undercooked risotto from Don and overseasoned mashed potatoes from Bryce. Meanwhile in the Red Kitchen, it's a much rockier start, as Norma sends up raw scallops and Lauryn sends under-portioned spaghetti. Thankfully, the Red Team makes it to entrées after 32 minutes. This ignites a flame in the Blue Team, having a near-flawless service during entrées, as the only mistakes were a well-done Wellington from Giancarlo and 3 miscommunications. The Blue Team makes it to desserts after a 40-minute entrée service. In the Red Kitchen, Norma has a disastrous service and is moved to meats by Gordon. Akira, who was moved to fish, sends up a raw snapper, halibut without garnish, and a disgusting salmon, which gets her kicked out of the kitchen. Norma later joins her after giving wrong times on steak. Luckily, great performances from Candace and Bella on Garnish, Martina on Meat, and Kelsie on fish gets them to desserts as well. The Red Team are declared losers, and discuss two nominees. Later, when Ramsay calls down the Red Team, he compliments the Blue Team for their fantastic service and calls on Kelsie for the nominees. She nominates Akira for the horrible performance on Fish, and Norma for her terrible performance and how she was lost during service. Ramsay calls them up. He initially calls up Akira, but tells her to wake up and sends her back in line. Gordon eliminates Norma, who admits to her mistakes and wishes she did better.
Gordon's comment: "Norma was anything but normal. She was lost during service, and she couldn't find her way back. She definitely didn't belong in Hell's Kitchen.

Welcome back to Reviewless Review Recs of May! A short introduction to this post: Every book is recommended, regardless of how bad it is or not. You have the brain capacity to decide if you like it or not, don’t let a stranger make a decision for you. I speak in the second POV and describe what the book is actually about, and not the false advertising of publishing companies. I do this with shitty jokes and satire and try to convince you to pick up the book, regardless of how I feel about it. Unlike Hoover, all books deserve a chance….Sigh, OK, fine, fine, Barbara. Even….Even...Eleventh Cycle. ARE YOU HAPPY, NOW, B- ___________________________________
May:
May was filled with disappointment that a jury vote existed and the king of Finland didn’t win Eurovision. The world unanimously cried, but couldn’t be that mad that Loreen won.
Except this bitch.
I fucking wanted Alika to win
so badly. I even voted and paid for the first time to give all my votes to her. Her song spoke to me and touched me that it’s never too late to go back to my work.
If Bomanz from
Black Company can become a famous sorcerer at his rickety age, maybe we can too!
My favorites of Eurovision (from music videos only, I feel like every one of my favs bombed someway except Finland, France, and Norway):
Estonia France Austria Czechia (wtf was that live performance...) Finland
In ACTUAL book news, I’ve been waiting patiently for the library to hand me the newest Mark Lawrence book that I’ve been waiting literally 3 and a half weeks now, but I still get bumped down on Libby...for some reason. Eh.
Also since I managed to finish “She Who Rides the Storm”, I
finally started “Elantris”
. Was a long time coming but was saving it for a while and thought it was finally time to tackle Sanderson. I started
Way of Kings with the paperback version and boy, that was a mistake for my ADHD…
And, that’s why I got a Kindle last year.
Anywho, let’s get started!

- As requested by a user, I have made the recs longer
- At the end of each Rec, I put a theme song that I thought fit each book appropriately. You can tell how much I loved Eurovision this year.

Reviewless Review Recs: \*
Seven Faceless Saints by M.K. Lobb: Read if you're in the ages 14-18, as this is possibly the most edgiest thing you might read about fictional Italy. Two teens are trying to solve a murder mystery in an alternate universe where Catholicism reigns supreme. Wait.
As an adult, this is a living personification of
that one prozd video.
If you ever played Phoenix Wright, you’ll figure out the murderer in 5 seconds. If you haven’t, then maybe this would come as a surprise.
Atheism is talked about on the nose, you can't stop thinking about “Friends” because of "Roz" being mentioned every other second, and our intrepid MC goes to horny jail every other second when she's literally fighting for her life and not focusing on a gun that could disembowel her.
PTSD of war is represented by the male MC who probably once could have been the trope of the “nice guy” in school that you never had interest in, but 3 years later, because he sported 5 o’ clock shadow and has a baritone voice, he’s automatically hot.
Oh, and there are token bi, POC, and elderly people, but they’re only mentioned for a few pages, so don’t expect that much diversity. You think Archer, Maas, and Lobb could actually be friends with each other given how they write their books. A secret society.

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman : Read if Percy Jackson wasn’t edgy and dark enough for you and need something similar. Uniorinically, this is actually not satire but an actual (sorta) rec. Structure is similar to Jackson but with none of the jovial themes and tropes. Think “Lightning Thief”, only dark and edgy with grotesque monsters and, not urbanite Greek deities, but evil people from the Crusades era.
You keep thinking you’ll meet the 4th character in the Sanderson reunion tour, but there’s actually only 3 characters that are on this journey, not 4. So that Italian will actually
not join us even though you liked his character a ton and curse at yourself at a potential LGBT partner dude. One day.
You will also find yourself crying, not because of how the story ended, but how the epilogue ended and boot up AO3 to fix everything.
You probably should(n’t) give this book to your aunt for reasons you know in the back of your mind but your evil AF. Maybe offer this to at Christmas and explain that it’s a book about a pilgrimage...(which isn’t totally wrong) but you’re a little bastard that is gonna get an ass whopping next Christmas, but it’ll be worth it.

Time of Contempt (Volume (???)) by Andrzej Sapkowski (Witcher) Read if you want to see Geralt turn into a woke ally Boomer, Yennefer going to relationship counseling, and Ciri gets her wish in more ways than one. If you’re comparing Witcher books with each other, quality has gone up since
Blood of Elves if that’s what you’re concerned about. We also see the Abyss Watchers making an appearance and then you think of Jerma’s Rat song in your head for inexplicable reasons.
This book is mostly about Yennefer trying to employ questionable (albeit understandable) parenting tactics on Ciri and being caught up in the after math.
As usual, book is dated towards rape, but the only saving grace is it’s “off screen” and not in your
face, “Eleventh Cycle”, knock that shit off Let’s be real, you can’t treat this series as a separate unique book to it’s own, it’s more of a long ass story that Sapkowski decided for marketing reasons to space it out in 300+ page books.
If you ask me what makes this more interesting than the previous books, it will be like asking me which regional orange looks different and bitch, I don’t got energy for that shit.

The Curse of the Spectre Queen / The Rise of the Snake Goddess by Jenny Moke Read if you like to imagine Indiana Jones as a teenage girl, but loves books. Instead of meeting hot girls, we meet hot 1920s men, which you get to decide how good or bad that is.
The BAMF slays and you wish we had her as our Jones instead of our shy book loving MC, but hey, at least this MC has at least
one quality to her that has way more personality that anything Shannon can hope to write in her stories. (Yes I know she writes her books as if they were history books, that’s not the point, Meredith)
Spectre Queen’s plot is literally about another book that will make you hug trees and will lead our characters across to Ireland. The next book is about a girdle, that you literally had to Google wtf a girdle was. You first thought it was a grill.
You wonder if the publishing agency struck a deal with the Irish and Crete travel agencies.
You also make a startling discovery that these characters are your OC from high school and middle school and your love interest OC from college mashed up into an adventure book that is oddly less erotic than anything Maas could create. You get to decide how good or bad that is.

Mordew by Alex Pheby Read if you want to read an MC
bland as hard tack inherit powers that don’t make sense till past the 70% mark. You want to read a dark
YOUTH ADULT novel. Can’t find anything that’s edgy and dark enough for you? Well, here it is!
Dark mansion with Igor from the Velvet Room
with an obvious villain being obvious, befriending a young boy that supposedly wants the best for him.
What can go wrong?
There are Souls-like elements weaved in, but you’re not going to see much of it. It’s mostly a vibe/fart than a plot or atmosphere.
What this book is pretty much: boy wants to help dad, there are weird monsters living in the mud, and a mansion that totally wants to abduct/help kids. Totally. Oh, and be aware, animals die in this book. A lot. An entire species is pretty much annihilated for teenage hormonal reasons that won’t make sense even if you’re still a teen. (Yes, I was one too and I also didn’t go on genocides. Thanks, Dad, you are a gem.). Oh, and someone fucked an anthropomorphized hedgehog along the way. Yeah. That happened.
If you go into this book,
DO NOT READ THE BLURB! It ruins the whole plot of the entire book. If you buy/rent it, don’t you dare flip to the back side. Just open to the first chapter and start reading. You’re welcome, Matt.

She Who Rides the Storm by Catelin Sangster Read if you like Sanderson and wished he focused more on the characters rather than the world building. You also like the ooey gooey feeling of finding a red/blue ship that you wished was the main pairing, but you’ll have to settle them being the side ship.
Oh god, why, every single time?! While it does have a romance tilt to it, this book focuses more on finding a cure for a mysterious illness and two of the characters are refugees from a religious cult that loves sunshine and that one weird horse mount from the
Empire Strikes Back that you couldn’t take the auroshees seriously because of that.
Imagine that desert bar scene in
A New Hope, but make it a
whole book. But make it about a heist as a side plot that is barely touched on until the last 20% of the novel.
You also love doing puzzles in your spare time as you’ll be doing a lot of piecing together of the plot and world building from chapter to chapter. Unlike my problems, this one is pieceable and the last remaining piece is dangled over your head until the next book.
...Sangster is probably going to make you pay $20 for this singular piece, ain’t she?
Ö Theme: First Aid Kit - The Lion’s Roar:

Medium Raw by Anthony Bourdain Read if you want to have a blunt conversation with Bourdain about food, the faults of the kitchens, what not to do if you want to be a chef, and to be transported to the deepest, darkest alley where you might be knifed, but goddamn, the best chicken heart can be found here.
If you’re a bitch that’s easily spooked by curse words, then this probably isn’t for you. Though...you can sneak this to your cook boyfriend if you want to break up, because he already read the fucking book, Berta, I thought you knew him better by now!...Now you can finally segway to break up. Congratulations!
You’ll see the workings of a mind that was suffering. That was the reflection of this entire autobiography. Suffering and food. That’s life in reality, ain’t it?
Don’t expect cohesion or a semblance of logical flow of pacing. This book, like Mr. Bourdain’s mind, was a cluster fuck of erotically describing food, the dark corners and reality of the cooking world, and shitting on people because they were dicks.
He is sorely missed, and this isn’t a bit, but I still mourn his loss to the world. The world needs him again.
RIP to the GOAT.

Skullduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy Read if you got tired of everything happy and sunshine in Percy Jackson and wanted
blood, death, knives, SKELETONS, AND 12 year olds that are surprisingly self aware of the fact that they’re a
teenager. You want less consumerism and capitalism than what Percy Jackson pushed down your throat. Finally, no mentions of those fucking gold arches,
Riordan.
Oddly, no parents are dead in this book. In every YA book you read, there is at least one parent dead, gone to get milk, or playing
Tears of the Kingdom. Pleasant surprise for this narrator.
You are also a person that hates world building that lastS for pages and pages. There’s none of that in this book. Expect pages of dialogue like it’s a transcript of my parent’s arguments.
Mom, I don’t agree with you. No, I don’t agree with you either, Dad.
You fucking little….Just plant the damn fig tree, for fuck’s sake. From other sources, apparently the book series gets darker as books go on, so take that as you will. Listening to Eminem and Linken Park between books may increase levels of angst in the subsequent books.
Side effects include: angst, a potentially bi-found family that lasts 10 seconds, fear of skeletons, mourning for fictional characters, and teenagers being oddly logical.
Post script: This would actually make an excellent autumnal book cause of spoopy skeletons.
Ö Theme: Lose Yourself – Eminem:

The White Rose (Volume 3 of the Black Company) by Glen Cook Read if you liked having Charm flashbacks of Volume 1, but want a great dopamine rush in Volume 3.
Night Circus got nothing on this book for reasons you’ll figure out later. Expect a lot of weird crack shenanigans such as talking rocks just to name an example. The Lady’s character is fleshed out a lot more than previous volumes. Twists and turns are aplenty and Croacker complaining he’s too old like an old grandpa shopping 10 AM at a Walmart.
Funny enough, Morgenstern is a lot related to this book in more ways than one. Move over, lady, Cook was the original writer of
Night Circus, caramel popcorn and candy apples be damned! We’re eating crusty bread and thickened stew, bitch!
You’re not going to be at the edge of your seat until the last percentage of the book, but it’s worth the dopamine rush and emotions that are given in the end, long after you put the book down. You will find yourself wandering around the library wondering how you returned from a reality of flying manta rays and talking rocks...to old ass Swedes loitering in the lobby, discussing where to fika next.
You’ll need a lot of Monsters to process your emotions tonight.
You also finally figure out where Miyazaki got the inspiration for the Storm King in
Demon Souls. All this time, you got mad at Miyazaki for inserting a giant manta ray for disappointing climax reasons. No. He may have understood
Black Company more than we thought.
Coleydoesthings is also screaming at the top of her lungs by the end of the book, crying into her body pillow.

Conclusion: @
I’ll be traveling soon, so the books might be on the short side, but my dumbass quality will remain. Just sprinkled with a lot of curry, chapati, and a big helping of obesity.
God, my thighs can’t take anymore of America.
I think I’ll have fun reading
Elantris cause it’s literally a love letter to Soulsbourne and I might learn a bit from it! Can’t wait for it!
I know it’s not book related too much, but what were y’alls favorite in Eurovision?

A selection of items “on special” this week in Coles and Woolworths that may be of interest to some keto followers. Most are processed so not really suitable for “clean keto”.
Victorian data, some may not be available interstate. Alcohol (except no carb beer) excluded. Drink prices exclude recycling deposits. If you are doing an online order, also look at the stores' ONLINE ONLY specials as I don't always include all of these, many are multibuys.

From the urban sprawl of Houston to the riverways of Virginia, air pollution from industrial plants is elevating the cancer risk of an estimated quarter of a million Americans to a level the federal government considers unacceptable.
Some of these hot spots of toxic air are infamous. An 85-mile stretch of the Mississippi River in Louisiana that’s thronged with oil refineries and chemical plants has earned the nickname Cancer Alley. Many other such areas remain unknown, even to residents breathing in the contaminated air.
Until now.
ProPublica undertook an analysis that has never been done before. Using advanced data processing software and a modeling tool developed by the Environmental Protection Agency, we
mapped the spread of cancer-causing chemicals from thousands of sources of hazardous air pollution across the country between 2014 and 2018. The result is an unparalleled view of how toxic air blooms around industrial facilities and spreads into nearby neighborhoods.
📷
The Most Detailed Map of Cancer-Causing Industrial Air Pollution in the U.S. At the map’s intimate scale, it’s possible to see up close how a massive chemical plant near a high school in Port Neches, Texas, laces the air with benzene, an aromatic gas that can
cause leukemia. Or how a manufacturing facility in New Castle, Delaware, for years blanketed a day care playground with ethylene oxide, a
highly toxic chemical that can lead to lymphoma and breast cancer. Our analysis found that ethylene oxide is the biggest contributor to excess industrial cancer risk from air pollutants nationwide. Corporations across the United States, but especially in Texas and Louisiana, manufacture the colorless, odorless gas, which lingers in the air for months and is highly mutagenic, meaning it can alter DNA.
In all, ProPublica identified more than a thousand hot spots of cancer-causing air. They are not equally distributed across the country. A quarter of the 20 hot spots with the highest levels of excess risk are in Texas, and almost all of them are in Southern states known for having weaker environmental regulations. Census tracts where the majority of residents are people of color experience about 40% more cancer-causing industrial air pollution on average than tracts where the residents are mostly white. In predominantly Black census tracts, the estimated cancer risk from toxic air pollution is more than double that of majority-white tracts.
After reviewing ProPublica’s map, Wayne Davis, an environmental scientist formerly with the EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, said, “The public is going to learn that EPA allows a hell of a lot of pollution to occur that the public does not think is occurring.”
Our analysis comes at a critical juncture for the fate of America’s air. After decades of improvement, air quality has, by some metrics,
begun to decline. In the last four years, the Trump administration rolled back more than
a hundred environmental protections, including two dozen air pollution and emissions policies.
The EPA says it “strives to
protect the greatest number of people possible” from an excess cancer risk worse than 1 in a million. That risk level means that if a million people in an area are continuously exposed to toxic air pollutants over a presumed lifetime of 70 years, there would likely be at least one case of cancer on top of those from other risks people already face. According to ProPublica’s analysis, 74 million Americans — more than a fifth of the population — are being exposed to estimated levels of risk higher than this.
EPA policy sets the upper limit of acceptable excess cancer risk at 1 in 10,000 — 100 times more than the EPA’s more aspirational goal and a level of exposure that numerous experts told ProPublica is too high. ProPublica found that an estimated 256,000 people are being exposed to risks beyond this threshold and that an estimated 43,000 people are being subjected to at least triple this level of risk. Still, the EPA sees crossing its risk threshold as more of a warning sign than a mandate for action: The law doesn’t require the agency to penalize polluters that, alone or in combination, raise the cancer risk in an area above the acceptable level.
In response to ProPublica’s findings, Joe Goffman, acting assistant administrator for the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, said in an emailed statement, “Toxic air emissions from industrial facilities are a problem that must be addressed.” Under President Joe Biden’s administration, “the EPA has reinvigorated its commitment to protect public health from toxic air emissions from industrial facilities — especially in communities that have already suffered disproportionately from air pollution and other environmental burdens.”
ProPublica’s reporting exposes flaws with EPA’s implementation of the Clean Air Act, a landmark law that dramatically reduced air pollution across America but provided less protection to those who live closest to industrial polluters.
The 1970 law resulted in outdoor air quality standards for a handful of widespread “criteria” pollutants, including sulfur dioxide and particulate matter, which could be traced to exhaust pipes and smokestacks all over the country and were proven to aggravate asthma and lead to early deaths. But 187 other dangerous chemicals, now known as hazardous air pollutants or air toxics, never got this level of attention. At the time, the science demonstrating the harms of these compounds, which primarily impact people in neighborhoods that border industrial facilities — so-called fence line communities — was still in its early stages. The EPA did not receive enough funding to set the same strict limits, and industry lobbying weakened the agency’s emerging regulations.
In 1990, Congress settled on a different approach to regulating air toxics. Since then, the EPA has made companies
install equipment to reduce their pollution and studied the remaining emissions to see if they pose an unacceptable health risk.
The way the agency assesses this risk vastly underestimates residents’ exposure, according to our analysis. Instead of looking at how cancer risk adds up when polluters are clustered together in a neighborhood, the EPA examines certain types of facilities and equipment in isolation. When the agency studies refineries, for example, it ignores a community’s exposure to pollution from nearby metal foundries or shipyards.
Matthew Tejada, director of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice, told ProPublica that tackling hot spots of toxic air will require “working back through 50 years of environmental regulation in the United States, and unpacking and untying a whole series of knots.”
Top Polluters The cancer-causing air emissions from these five corporations cover more populated square miles than the emissions from any other companies, according to our analysis.
- The Dow Chemical Company
- Huntsman Corp.
- Eastman Chemical Co.
- BASF
- LyondellBasell Industries
Most of these companies did not comment; Eastman said, “Not all risk is due to industrial activity, however, we continue to do our part to reduce risk and emissions to ensure the safety of our local community.” “The environmental regulatory system wasn’t set up to deal with these things,” he said. “All of the parts of the system have to be re-thought to address hot spots or places where we know there’s a disproportionate burden.”
The Clean Air Act rarely requires industry or the EPA to monitor for air toxics, leaving residents near these plants chronically uninformed about what they’re breathing in. And when companies report their emissions to the EPA, they’re allowed to estimate them using
flawed formulas and monitoring methods.
“These fence line communities are sacrifice zones,” said Jane Williams, executive director of California Communities Against Toxics. “Before there was climate denial, there was cancer denial. We release millions of pounds of carcinogens into our air, water and food and act mystified when people start getting sick.”

The cancer risks from industrial pollution can be compounded by factors like age, diet, genetic predisposition and exposure to radiation; the knock-on effect of inhaling toxic air for decades might, for example, mean the difference between merely having a family history of breast cancer and actually developing the disease yourself. While the cancer and asthma rates in Houston’s Harris County are comparable with those in the rest of the state, Texas officials have identified cancer clusters in several of the city’s neighborhoods.
Large swaths of the Greater Houston area make up the third-biggest hot spot of cancer-causing air in the country, according to our analysis, after Louisiana’s Cancer Alley and an area around Port Arthur, Texas, which is on the Louisiana border. For many homes closest to the fence lines of petrochemical plants in cities like La Porte and Port Neches, Texas, the estimated excess risk of cancer ranges from three to six times the level that the EPA considers acceptable.
But because of the way that the EPA underestimates risk, the true dangers of living in a toxic hot spot are often invisible to regulators and residents.
The agency breaks things down into the smallest possible categories “to avoid addressing what we call cumulative risk,” said John Walke, an attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council who formerly worked as an EPA lawyer advising the Office of Air and Radiation. “But our bodies do not parse out air pollution according to rule labels or industrial equipment or industrial source categories.” The cancer risk from each facility or type of equipment may be at levels the agency considers “acceptable,” but taken together, the potential harms can be substantial.
The EPA initially sent ProPublica a statement saying that it “ensures that risks from individual source categories are acceptable and that the standards provide an ample margin of safety to protect public health.”
In another statement sent after an interview, the agency added, “We understand that communities often confront multiple sources of toxic air pollution and face cumulative risks greater than the risk from a single source.” The EPA added that it was working both to better harness the science on cumulative risks and “to better understand risks for communities who are overburdened by numerous sources of multiple pollutants.”
Madison can’t help but notice that when her family travels, K’ryah’s asthma improves. “The first chance I get, I’m moving far away from Texas and never looking back,” she said. “I love being outside. I love seeing the stars. I don’t want to feel like someone is pumping gas onto our front porch.”
The locations of the
hot spots identified by ProPublica are anything but random. Industrial giants tend to favor areas that confer strategic advantages: On the Gulf Coast, for instance, oil rigs abound, so it’s more convenient to build refineries along the shoreline. Corporations also favor places where land is cheap and regulations are few.
Under federal law, the EPA delegates the majority of its enforcement powers to state and local authorities, which means that the environmental protections afforded to Americans vary widely between states. Texas, which is home to some of the largest hot spots in the nation, has
notoriously lax regulations.
Between 2008 and 2018, lawmakers cut funding for state pollution-control programs by 35% while boosting the state’s overall budget by 41%, according to
a report by the Environmental Integrity Project, an advocacy group founded by former EPA staffers. A
Texas Tribune story from 2017 found that during the prior year, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality had levied fines in fewer than 1% of the cases in which polluters exceeded emission limits. Even when
penalties are issued, many polluters see these fines as part of the cost of doing business, said Craig Johnston, a former lawyer at the EPA and a professor of environmental law at Lewis and Clark Law School.
Gary Rasp, a TCEQ spokesperson, told ProPublica that the agency “has taken actions to monitor, mitigate, and improve the air quality in fence line communities.” The agency runs dozens of stationary air toxics monitors across the state, he added, and “by continuously evaluating air monitoring data, which is more accurate than modeling, TCEQ can identify issues.” The agency also inspects industrial facilities and “has an active enforcement program, referring particularly egregious cases to the Texas Office of the Attorney General.”
That the people living inside these hot spots are disproportionately Black is not a coincidence. Our findings build on
decades of evidence demonstrating that pollution is segregated: People of color are exposed to far greater levels of air pollution than whites — a pattern that persists across income levels. These disparities are rooted in
racist real estate practices like redlining and the designation of
low-income neighborhoods and communities of color as mixed residential-industrial zones. In cities like Houston, for example, all-white zoning boards
targeted Black neighborhoods for the siting of noxious facilities, like landfills, incinerators and garbage dumps. Robert Bullard, a professor of urban planning and environmental policy at Texas Southern University, has
called the practice “PIBBY” or “Place In Blacks’ Back Yard” — a spin on the acronym “NIMBY” (“Not In My Back Yard”).
📷
How We Created the Most Detailed Map Ever of Cancer-Causing Industrial Air Pollution Many of the neighborhoods that border chemical plants are low-income and lack the same resources, access to health care and political capital that wealthier neighborhoods can bring to
fights against intrusive commercial activities. In places like Baytown, working-class people depend on the very companies that sicken them to earn a living. Over the years, the shadow of industry can permanently impair not just a neighborhood’s health but also its economic prospects and property values, fueling a cycle of disinvestment. “Industries rely on having these sinks — these sacrifice zones — for polluting,” said Ana Baptista, an environmental policy professor at The New School. “That political calculus has kept in place a regulatory system that allows for the continued concentration of industry. We sacrifice these low-income, African American, Indigenous communities for the economic benefit of the region or state or country.”
Tejada, the EPA’s director of environmental justice, said that the Biden administration and the EPA are focused on confronting these disparities. “These places didn’t happen by accident. The disproportionality of the impacts that they face, the generations of disinvestment and lack of access are not coincidences. These places were created. And it is the responsibility of everyone, including the government — chiefly the government — to do something about it.”
The federal government has long had the information it would need to take on these hot spots. The EPA collects emissions data from more than 20,000 industrial facilities across the country and has even developed its own state-of-the-art tool — the Risk-Screening Environmental Indicators model — to estimate the impact of toxic emissions on human health. The model, known as RSEI, was designed to help regulators and lawmakers pinpoint where to target further air-monitoring efforts, data-quality inspections or, if necessary, enforcement actions. Researchers and journalists have used this model for
various investigations over the years, including
this one.
And yet the agency’s own use of its powerful modeling tool has been limited. There’s been a lack of funding for and a dearth of interest in RSEI’s more ambitious applications, according to several former and current EPA employees. Wayne Davis, the former EPA scientist, managed the RSEI program under the Trump administration. He said that some of his supervisors were hesitant about publishing information that would directly implicate a facility. “They always told us, ‘Don’t make a big deal of it, don’t market it, and hopefully you’ll continue to get funding next year.’ They didn’t want to make anything public that would raise questions about why the EPA hadn’t done anything to regulate that facility.”
Nicolaas Bouwes, a former senior analyst at the EPA and a chief architect of the RSEI model, recalled the occasional battle to get colleagues to accept the screening tool, let alone share its findings with the public. “There’s often been pushback from having this rich data sheet too readily available because it could make headlines,” he said. “What I find annoying is that the EPA has the same information at their disposal and they don’t use it. If ProPublica can do this, so can the EPA.”
In its statement, the EPA said that it plans to improve its approach for sharing air toxics data faster and more regularly with the public. “EPA has not published calculated cancer risks using RSEI modeled results,” it continued. “RSEI results are not designed as a substitute for more comprehensive, inclusive, or site specific risk assessments,” but as a potential starting point that should only be used “to identify situations of potential concern that may warrant further investigation.”
Indeed,
our map works as a screening tool, not as a site-specific risk assessment. It cannot be used to tie individual cancer cases to emissions from specific industrial facilities, but it can be used to diagnose what the EPA calls “situations of potential concern.”
Our analysis arrives as America faces new threats to its air quality. The downstream effects of climate change, like warmer temperatures and massive wildfires, have created more smoke and smog. The Trump administration diluted, scuttled or reversed dozens of air pollution protections — actions
estimated to lead to thousands of additional premature deaths. In 2018, then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt created a massive air toxics loophole when he rolled back a key provision of the Clean Air Act, known as “Once In, Always In,” allowing thousands of large polluters to relax their use of pollution-controlling equipment.
Biden has yet to close this loophole, but he has signaled plans to alleviate the disproportionate impacts borne by the people who live in these hot spots. Within his first few days in office, he established two White House councils to address environmental injustice. And in March, Congress confirmed his appointment of EPA administrator Michael Regan, who has directed the agency to strengthen its enforcement of violations “in communities overburdened by pollution.”
https://www.propublica.org/article/toxmap-poison-in-the-air Over the years, Sullivan Ramirez herself has struggled with nerve degeneration and scleroderma, a rare condition that involves the tightening of the skin and connective tissues. While it can be difficult to link specific cases of disease to pollution exposure, the evidence in Mossville has accumulated: In a 1998 health survey conducted by the University of Texas, 84% of Mossville residents reported having headaches, dizziness, tremors and seizures. An EPA study from the same year found that
the average level of dioxins in the blood of Mossville residents was dangerously high — triple that of the general U.S. population. Even small amounts of dioxin, one of the most poisonous chemicals released by facilities, can cause developmental problems, damage the immune system and lead to cancer. A 2007 report found that the types of dioxin compounds in the blood of Mossville residents matched those emitted by local industrial facilities.
In an emailed statement, Sasol noted that its property buyout stemmed from direct requests from Mossville residents and that the company offered owners more than the appraised value of their homes. “Sasol and its predecessor have produced or handled chemicals at our Lake Charles complex for more than 60 years. We understand the science and have controls in place to ensure our operations are safe, protective of the environment, compliant with regulations and sustainable over the long term,” wrote Sarah Hughes, a spokesperson for Sasol. “Sasol is proud of our engagement with our neighbors in Mossville and the positive impact it has had on many of its residents.”
📷
Can Air Pollution Cause Cancer? What You Need to Know About the Risks. Sullivan Ramirez is wary of too much talk. She knows that the new administration has promised something more for communities like hers, but she doesn’t want to get her hopes up. The presentations from captains of industry, the listening sessions with earnest bureaucrats, the proposals from slick attorneys, the promises tossed off by politicians — over the years, she’s heard it all.
The people of Mossville are right to be skeptical, the EPA’s Tejada acknowledged. “I would be skeptical if I was from Mossville,” he added. “They should be skeptical until we actually show up and do the things that they’ve been asking us to do for a long time. But there’s now a level of commitment to actually tangling with these issues in a really serious, substantive way.”
After years of activism in Mossville, Sullivan Ramirez moved to Lake Charles, just a short drive away. But she worries the industrial sprawl will one day overtake her new home. To Sullivan Ramirez, Mossville is “the key” — a warning of what the future holds for America’s other hot spots if business continues as usual.
“This is the 21st century,” she said. “The act of polluting our lands and robbing our communities — when will enough be enough?”

2023.05.28 18:36 Satu97 Stay in TX or go back to Jersey
My wife (25f) and I (26m) are faced with two options to weigh and decide. Our answer will shape the rest of our lives. This has been racking our brains for the last week+ because we want to leave our house asap and sell it.
We can either move back home to family in NJ, get jobs and save up to buy an expensive house that still needs work (the market is terrible rn in jersey) or stay here in Texas and move to DFW and have a significantly greater quality of life.
We’re an hour south of Houston right now and we hate it. We have so many bad memories here, from cancer diagnoses, wage theft, lost the people we originally came out here for etc. we live in a beautiful home but we’re house broke because the work opportunities here aren’t fruitful if you’re not a blue collar worker. (We moved to a town where everyone asks why the hell we would move here of all places)
We can go back to NJ but we would be living in my childhood bedroom with our 2 cats, dog, and snake. We don’t even know when we’d be able to afford a place to own anytime soon there. The rent is astronomical as are the median home prices. Atleast 2.2x the avg cost of a home here in Texas (New constructions with marble countertops and slate showers for sub 300k, non existent in nj for under 450-500k).
We are fortunate to not have to pay any property taxes in NJ or TX so that’s not a con in either state for us. We have both been living together away from friends and family for 6 years now. We left because I was active duty stationed in NC and she was already in college, by the time my service was over we came out here for some family that has since cut us off knowing we have absolutely nobody out here.
We want to sell the house we’re currently in because we are miserable and depressed here, due to us not being able to afford to go on trips or the lack of nightlife/activities for non child rearing young adults and the fact that we came here for reasons that I’ve since ceased. Kids aren’t in our future so we’d like to make a positive out of no kids by loving our lives and doing the things people with kids can’t do anymore like taking the random getaways that we wouldn’t be able to afford with kids.
I did the math and if we purchase a home in the DFW area, we would have it paid off in 5-7 years (2yr flex for emergency funding) and that’s barely budgeting at all tbh, we’re just very fortunate to have those means. So we just don’t know if its worth it to give up this massive financial potential and stability of our future here to appease the people that miss us. Their take on it is “you didn’t listen to us when we said don’t go, y’all are miserable, and you’re just not gonna listen to us again and go somewhere else?” Meanwhile not a single person we know our age is able to live on their own in a decent house let alone a place without roommates at all and the people saying this either have to break their back with 2 jobs to afford ends meat or they’re getting tremendous support from family that we wouldn’t have. We love jersey and it’s culture, you won’t find it anywhere else, and we can go visit as much as we want if we live out here, but if we live there we’d struggle to even exist and take the time for ourselves. The reason I keep harping on trips and vacations is because my wife and I didn’t have a lot growing up and since we know kids aren’t happening, we’d like treat ourselves to a nice lifestyle. It’s not about the area for us, we foster animals and stay inside watching anime or playing video games most days. It’s really more or less will be able to use our money how we want to instead of dumping most of it into the interest of a home that we may feel regret over buying knowing what we could have else where.
It just feels like we’re bad people if we say we want to have a better quality home and more financial freedom for a ourselves since we’re not having kids. We don’t want to spend 30 years and all of our money to pay off a house and it’s interest when we can do it here in a fraction of the time while still saving money for other things like trips and date nights. Especially when we’re so young and fortunate enough to have this be our difficult decision. We also feel like we didn’t really give Texas a chance due to the year of us being here being so hectic and challenging and dealing with cancer and surgery and a bad ISD that committed wage theft. We’ve been told that we moved to the armpit of the armpit of Texas (Brazoria county Freeport area) and we think it’s be a night and day difference to DFW. We have a family friend in DFW who swears by it and can set my wife up with a teaching position at a local charter school. Oh we’d also have to make the 26hour+ drive to jersey with two cats a dog and a snake. The logistics involved with that alone scare us, godforbid one our cats got out of the car somewhere in the middle of the trip.
So essentially we don’t know what the “right” decision is and are afraid everyone back home will hate us for not coming back after venting to them about how much difficulties we’ve been faced with since coming here even though it really had nothing to do with Texas itself, we just got a lot of bad news since being here that made us really depressed. My wife’s Grandparents cut her off when they heard we moved to Texas because they couldn’t use our Nc house as a stopping point for their trips to florida and they took it as her running away from them even though we lived in a completely different state. she’s afraid she’ll be cut off again if she tells her we’re moving again in Texas and not closer to “home”. This really hurt my wife because she doesn’t have a relationship with her father and her mother passed away so her grandparents are all she has on her side.
TLDR: A couple is deciding whether to move back to their home state of NJ and live with family while struggling to afford a home, or stay in Texas but move to the DFW area for better job opportunities, quality of life, and financial stability. They have had a challenging time in Texas with bad memories and limited opportunities, but feel like they didn't give it a fair chance. They are hesitant to give up their financial potential for the sake of appeasing family, and aren't planning on having kids. They also worry about the logistics and stress of moving their pets such a long distance. If they choose Texas, how can they explain it to their family without sounding insensitive or selfish. They’re terrified of making the wrong decision since they’re so drastically different and have a lot of holdback when it comes to moving to jersey regarding finances and not being established in a career yet.

2023.05.27 11:53 Souviens-toi_Sydney Remember… Sydney. Novel about childs abuse and shunning in the Watchtower
In March 2020, the book “Souviens-toi… Sydney” (Remember… Sydney) was published, telling the story of Claire, a young Jehovah’s Witness prisoner of her faith, struggling to live her life as a woman and wife and having to face up to the demons of her past, the existence of which she has forgotten. After three years of success, the novel has been finally translated into English. We hope to publish it this autumn (2023). That is why we need your help to raise the funds to print the book.
Why do you have to support this project? Because the abuse of minors is not a simple sin, but a crime that must be reported to the authorities; Because the control of the Watchtower’s Governing Body over its followers is absolute; Because the suffering of those who are rejected, cut off from their families, from their social fabric, without friends, is unbearable.
Background While the Catholic Church is often singled out for its handling of child sexual abuse, paedocriminality is a reality in other religious communities. In 2015, the dysfunction of the Jehovah’s Witnesses was exposed in a major scandal in Australia. More than a thousand cases of paedophilia have been hidden from the public and the victims stigmatised into silence. The publicity surrounding the findings of the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (ARC) has loosened tongues and brought many more cases to light. Written in the wake of the findings of the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, this book is not only a poignant testimony, but also a message of hope. The authors, Eneeh Quarter and her close friend Baruq, know the Jehovah’s Witnesses well. They grew up in this environment and were deeply involved in the movement before leaving due to the many abuses committed by the organisation. In this gripping and well-documented novel, they invite the reader to enter the closed world of this notorious religious community, the functioning of which is all too often unclear. The promised paradise turns out to be hell.
Nearly 500 screaming pages of truth to ensure victims are never silenced again It took Eneeh Quarter and Baruq two years of writing and investigation, sleepless nights and wrist cramps, to write, “Remember… Sydney,” a title that evokes the Australian commission that brought the Jehovah’s Witness organisation to the fore. Although fortunately, they had no similar experience, Eneeh and Baruq undertook extensive research and collected dozens of testimonies on the internet denouncing the policy of the Watchtower (the editorial entity that manages the activities of Jehovah’s Witnesses from Warwick, USA) in handling cases of sexual abuse of minors. Rather than a collection of real-life stories, of which there are many on the web, they have imagined a compelling narrative in which anyone who has had similar experiences can find himself. “Remember… Sydney” is not intended to condemn any particular movement, as the events described are common to many other associations, both religious and non-religious (e.g. extracurricular). It has been written in a spirit of healthy and constructive criticism and not in a spirit of rancour, anger, frustration or hatred. The authors are not in denial about their past, nor do they have any animosity towards their former co-religionists. It is therefore an objective work, written with a fresh mind and clarity of thought, which highlights the distortions caused by the directives of the Governing Body, which controls every moment of the members’ lives.
Eneeh points out: “Despite the denials of its leaders, there is a real problem within this organisation. The repercussions could be far more serious than those that have affected the Catholic Church, mainly because members refuse to face reality. They have been instructed not to give credence to the accusations made by the victims. But through the web, the voices of the oppressed are getting louder and louder, and it will be increasingly difficult to silence them. It could be a rude awakening for millions of followers.” Summary Claire, 21 years old and newly married, grew up in Lausanne in a family of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She could be happy, but unusual events spoil her life as a couple. Her husband, Jérémie, tries to help her, but finds himself powerless to deal with his wife’s problems. The young wife would have liked to find support from her mother, but her blind faith in the creed of her religion prevents her from helping her daughter properly. She has been remarried to Raymond, a Belgian Jehovah’s Witness, after Claire’s father left when she was seven. Her stepfather’s activities are mysterious, but does he really have something to hide? She finds support in two people: Isabelle, her childhood friend, with whom she has planned a trip, and Éloïse, her work colleague, who makes her reason about her beliefs and encourages her not to put blind trust in men. Two tragic events will once again turn her life upside down and separate her from those who are most dear to her. She will experience the pain of rejection. Éléonore, a psychotherapist, and Anna, who practises gentle hypnosis, will go in search of the events of her past that she has forgotten and that certainly explain the inferno of her present life.
Excerpts Huge revelations “A Jehovah’s Witness is labelled an apostate in the same way that women were accused of being witches within the Church in past centuries. And the sentence is always a death sentence. What is the worst agony? That of the stake, or rather the anathema of the individual who suddenly finds himself excluded from the social fabric, rejected by his family and companions, deprived of everything that constitutes his reason for living?” “A dozen masked men and women were gathered in a room in what appeared to be a castle or an old stone house. Young prepubescent boys, obviously drugged, were brought in and subjected to the worst atrocities. Between sodomy, fellatio, brutality, and other bestial practices of which I did not even suspect the existence, each and everyone sought to draw the maximum enjoyment from the bodies of these poor creatures. I could not imagine that human perversion could reach such a level of evil.” But also a message of hope “Life is like a rose, and we often get hurt by its thorns. But we know that this is the price we have to pay to enjoy the beauty of the flower. So, to paraphrase someone, instead of complaining that roses have thorns, let us rejoice that thorns have roses. Yet, after all these trials, I was rather inclined to observe that when the rose was wilted, only the spines remained. ‘You’re right. But if you take care of the rose bush, feed it and water it, when the season comes, it will bloom again.’” A book of solidarity The authors and their family support various associations to help victims, so that the clergy (of all religions) can no longer hide behind the secrecy of confession and are obliged to denounce to the authorities the crimes of which they become aware, whatever their nature, but especially those which affect the integrity of children.
What readers think Victor Bouadjio (from the magazine Écrire Aujourd’hui): “I am writing about Eneeh Quarter’s famous novel which, when read in this finished and edited form, I rediscover its quality and scope. It is truly a success and should definitely be given the success it deserves. Moreover, the editor’s work has resulted in a beautiful object, attractive, pleasant and makes you want to open it. Everything is there, not to mention the prologue and the beginning which leaves no ambiguity as I would have feared. Eneeh can be proud of her book.” Christophe Baroni (from the Élise Lucet support group): “In addition to the various investigations carried out by Élise Lucet and her team on paedocriminality, a social scourge that is rampant in many sectors (the Catholic Church, sport, private music lessons, certain tourist sites…), I would like to draw your attention to the recent book by Eneeh Quarter, ‘REMEMBER… SYDNEY.’ Everything is true in this well-written book – a testimony that would make an excellent film script…” Manon Boyer (reader from Canada): “Eneeh Quarter, you should be proud. An extraordinary novel that I enjoyed reading, a must-read.” Éric Gris (reader from France): “I am very happy for your courage and tenacity to see that your efforts and fight against these despicable acts committed against many victims are successful. Congratulations on your work.” Morganne d’Arcourt (Paris, France): “This book is absolutely indispensable.” Dominique Reynaud (YouTuber): “A first novel that is a masterpiece.” Margaux, from margorotsuki.wordpress.com; “A tragic but instructive story.” Michel (from France); “For those who are not familiar with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, this is a good way to discover how this movement works. Between the control over the life of the members, the ostracism towards those who leave, without forgetting the management of the paedophilia cases, everything is clearly exposed in the form of a novel that one does not let go until the last page. Moments of strong emotion (a few tears torn away) punctuated by a touch of humour.” Bill Bowen (USA): “Thank you very much for sharing your story, it’s very important.” Réau M.: “A poignant, gripping and very moving novel. I liked the fact that each term of the community is explained at the bottom of the page, which allows us to find our way around. A very nice discovery, the author managed to take me totally into a world I didn’t know.” About the authors Eneeh and Baruq share the distinction of having been born on the same day in 1964 and having each grown up in a Jehovah's Witness family. Eneeh is the second child in a family of four. When she was in her third year, her parents, who were living in a small Alpine community, were visited by a couple of Jehovah’s Witnesses and, seduced by the message of a better future, joined the movement. She has therefore spent most of her life within the group and knows its inner workings. Although she distanced herself from the Jehovah’s Witnesses several years ago, she does not deny her background. The harshness of her upbringing, especially by her father, has made her strong and ready to face the ups and downs of life, which she approaches with philosophy. Paradoxically, this has also led to a difficulty in assessing herself, always afraid of making the wrong choice or failing, and reluctant to put herself forward. Baruq, a great lover of books – the family library was well stocked with classical authors and he did not lack the children’s literature that his father, a publishing representative, regularly supplied him with – developed a taste for reading as well as for writing at an early age. He wrote his first poem at the age of nine and it was highlighted in the class she was attending at the time. His dream was to write a book, but his early commitments to work and family – and to religion, in which he was deeply involved – meant that this dream took a back seat. In their fifties, disappointed by the direction of the organisation to which they had dedicated their lives, Eneeh and Baruq began to investigate the Jehovah’s Witnesses, a group with which they felt less and less comfortable. Doubts began to arise, especially when they compared the teachings they were receiving with the personal Bible study they were engaged in. It was at this time that the ARC, the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, began its sessions in Australia. It followed reports of the movement of abusers of minors over many years in various groups, such as the Catholic Church, the Scouts, schools, without any action being taken to stop the phenomenon, on the contrary, an attempt was made to conceal it. Local representatives of Jehovah’s Witnesses were interviewed, as well as one of the senior officials of the American headquarters. It was this dramatic episode that inspired them to write, “Remember… Sydney.”
Eneeh adds: “We have been pleasantly surprised by the response to this book. The first edition, published in March 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 crisis, sold out in just one month and received excellent reviews from the public. Today we have decided to increase its distribution so that as many people as possible, whether Jehovah’s Witnesses or not, can understand the workings of this organisation and its control over its members.” As for Baruq, he is the founder and administrator of the website baruq.uk.
What are the funds for? Design and layout The first step is to design and layout the book. Eneeh and Baruq need 500 euros for this. They have already raised half of this amount for the preparatory work, but is still 250 euros short.
Media & Marketing Various media should be contacted. Promoting the book to various figures in the media can be handled by a specialist company. This will also highlight the Watchtower’s policies. The cost is estimated at 1500 euros.
Printing and shipping the book Finally, the time has come to print the book and send it to the contributors. You will have the opportunity to enjoy Claire’s adventures and find out how she managed to break free from the Watchtower’s grip. But is there anything better in store for her? Will she be able to rebuild her life and forget the misfortunes of the past? Printing and shipping of the book have been estimated at 2000 euros.
Frequently asked questions How to participate to the project? The best way to help Eneeh and Baruq is to order the book at the cost of 27.00 euros (or its equivalent in Dollars, Swiss Francs or Pounds) including delivery to your address. If you do not want to buy the book, you can make a donation. But if you don’t usually read, you can also order one or more books for people around you who might benefit from them, especially if they are involved in a high-control religion.
I am afraid that receiving the book at my address may cause me some trouble. My family is very involved in the Watchtower organisation We are saddened that you have to deal with this situation, which is common to many Jehovah’s Witnesses or other people within high control groups who no longer recognise themselves in their organisation, but remain trapped within it so as not to lose family ties. Many people have chosen to receive the book at an alternative address, such as their workplace, a friend’s house, a family member’s house, or a trusted shopkeeper’s house. Please remember to include their address on the checkout form. We hope you enjoy reading Eneeh Quarter’s book, “Remember… Sydney”, with no worries.
When will I get my copy of the book? We hope to ship before the Christmas period of 2023. The sooner the crowdfunding operation is successful, the faster the shipments will be. Eneeh is relying on you!

Prelude and prologue The Killing Moon He swore as he unlocked the front door of the villa. He had been so busy that he had not noticed the change in the weather. He opened the screen that protected the house from the many unwanted insects of these summer days. In fact, more than mosquitoes, he hated flies, especially the big black ones with their striped bodies. Then, there were the green flies, the shit flies, as he called them, that hovered over the meat when his wife took it out of the fridge and left it out for a few minutes, supposedly to tenderise it and make it taste better. He kept telling her to cover it up, but she regularly forgot. What was so complicated about a piece of tin foil on the plate? Once, he found worms crawling in the sausages. The female fly had undoubtedly landed on the sausages while his wife was picking them and had been trapped when she closed the package to put it away. He was so disgusted that he stopped eating meat for a month. Outside, the sky was full of clouds. In the distance, the horizon blurred between plain and what had been azure blue just a few minutes before. The streetlamps were on, giving the second half of the afternoon a winter evening feel. A flash of lightning streaked across the sky and, immediately after, a clap of thunder that startled him signalled the beginning of the downpour. Within moments, the lawn had turned into a muddy field. The soil, which had been so dry in recent weeks, sucked up the water greedily and finally spat it out, like a drunkard on a month’s detox would spit out the bottle he had swallowed in one gulp on his first day of freedom. But the man had no choice. He took a deep breath, put on the jacket hanging from the porch stand, pulled the hood over his head and walked quickly to the lean-to against the wall of the neighbouring villa. There, he grabbed a pick and a shovel and headed for the bottom of the garden at the back of the house. All in all, this rain was a blessing. No one would pay any attention to him. A high fence marked the boundary between the property and the communal cemetery. Besides, with all the water pouring down, there was little chance that anyone would think of venturing inside. As for the neighbours – a young couple with two children who had recently moved in – they were probably sunbathing on one of the crowded beaches of the French Riviera. Since they had moved into the neighbourhood, he had not tried to make contact with them, apart from a few greetings over the hedge. André, the husband, looked friendly and well groomed, going to work in a three-piece suit and tie appropriate to his job as a bank executive. However, he definitely did not like the look of his wife, whose name he had not bothered to memorise, a yummy mummy with excessive make-up who seemed to have nothing to do all day but show off in ultra-short skirts and curve-hugging tops that revealed the absence of a bra – the height of vulgarity. She was the very kind of woman who thought she was free because she flaunted herself without modesty, and who made him uncomfortable. The son must have been about eight years old. He was a small, fat boy who ate sweets and biscuits all day long. He had passed him on the street a few times, and the misbehaving youngster had not once greeted him. The girl was about the same age as his own daughter. She had long blonde hair and large blue eyes. He knew her name was Cassandra. He often watched her rocking on the swing in the garden while her mother sat by the pool, indecently exposed to the sun and passers-by in a tiny bathing costume. He would have liked the two children to become friends, and for Cassandra to come and play in the house from time to time. Unfortunately, his daughter was particularly shy and refused the company of anyone other than her parents. He had no idea how to promote the meeting. Only caution had kept him from being reckless and doing anything. People are so suspicious when it comes to their offspring! One by one, facing the storm, he moved the stack of logs that were waiting for winter to burn in the cast-iron stove in the living room. Once that was done, he set about the hardest but most important task. With a pick and shovel, he dug a deep pit about the size of a large dog. Despite the increasingly heavy rain, he was sweating. Stirring the heavy earth was no easy task. Physical activity was not something he was used to, but it was not an option. Vivienne would finish work at half past seven, and it would take her no more than twenty minutes to get home. During this holiday period, she might even return earlier, not having to deal with the heavy traffic of the other months of the year. Everything had to be in place by the time his wife got home. The operation took almost an hour. During that time, he cursed himself for his carelessness in the way things had unfolded. But was it his fault that the normally docile little girl had shown so much ill will today? If she had let him carry on as before, he would not have found himself in this situation. The problem with children is that their reactions are often unpredictable. The fact that she was recovering from a bout of chickenpox that had kept her in bed for the past few weeks was no excuse for her lack of enthusiasm for the activities they had always shared and which she seemed to enjoy. Instead, she had preferred to play with the doll above her bed, a pierrot sitting on a moon, which she had treasured since she was a baby and which had been her companion during her illness. Faced with her reluctance, he had become angry and had broken the toy. The girl had cried hysterically, a crisis that had culminated in his temper tantrum and the fatal volley of slaps. These weeks of deprivation had stressed him. Still, it was not his intention to hurt her. But how could he have expected her head to hit the edge of the bed and knock her unconscious? When he was satisfied with the size of the pit, he went home. He stripped completely on the landing so as not to muddy the place, which would have required a time-consuming clean-up. He would have enough to do in the bedroom! The child had woken briefly, vomited profusely, then slipped back into unconsciousness until she finally breathed her last and became still. He walked over to the girl and stood for a moment looking at her. Her long blonde hair, deep blue eyes and fair complexion moved him as they had for the past five years. He leaned down and kissed her tenderly. Then, he picked her up and left the room. The rain had decreased in intensity. He dressed and went back into the garden. He put his load on the ground, ran to the shed, took out a tarpaulin and returned to the yard. He unrolled the sheet and wrapped the child in it. Then, he laid the child down in the pit. He carefully filled in the gap, put the pile of wood back in place to hide the excavation, cleaned up and put away his tools, and went back into his house with satisfaction. After removing the evidence of his crime and tidying the room, he took a long shower, went to the telephone and dialled the number of the gendarmerie: “I’m calling to report the disappearance of my daughter Clara.”
Prologue Through the window, I watch the lights of the city fade away. Seeing me gloomy, my dad asks for the reason. Faced with my silence, he doesn’t ask again. No doubt he thinks that my mood is due to our early return after an all too short stay. In any case, he has a hunch that, at the right moment, I will tell him what is on my mind. He puts his hand on my cheek, but I turn my head and close my eyes. In about fifteen hours, we will be in Singapore, and ten hours later, we will land in Zurich. Then, we will just have to take the train and go home. The aircraft has now broken through the clouds. Above us, the twinkling of the stars has replaced the artificial glare of the metropolis. Morosely, I dwell on the circumstances that led me to undertake this long journey to the other side of the globe, the roots of which are deeply anchored in the years of my early childhood, events that will mark my life forever.

2023.05.25 14:54 kittehgoesmeow What A Day: Soft Target by Julia Claire & Crooked Media (05/24/23)
"They're living on planet crazy, and I don't frankly want to be on that same planet with them because they've lost their minds." - Former Arizona GOP candidate for governor Kari Lake, perhaps projecting just a tad after losing yet another legal challenge to the election she definitively lost. The Death Ceiling
With a little over a week left until the government runs out of money, defaults on its debts, and sends the global economy into a tailspin, Republicans in Congress have seemingly unified to ensure that happens. - Well, folks, we’ve happened upon the most destructive version of “Same shit, different day.” After it looked like negotiations between the White House and Republican leaders were getting somewhere (anywhere?) the latter have once again dug in their heels with demands to reduce spending only in ways that would hurt the most vulnerable Americans. As Rep. AOC (D-NY) said in a press conference today, Republicans, led by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, “are engaged in hostage-taking, not negotiation.”
- Republicans, it turns out, agree with AOC. Several of them have done the whole “say the quiet part loud” thing in the past 24 hours. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said wants to hold out for the entire GOP wish list, and that he doesn’t “feel like we should negotiate with our hostage.” It isn’t just Gaetz, though. When McCarthy, along with Reps. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) and Garret Graves (R-LA), have been asked what concessions Republicans have offered in these negotiations, they all said the GOP concession is “raise the debt ceiling.” In other words, they get what they want, and in exchange they agree not to wreck the economy.
- McCarthy said on Wednesday that his team of little cretin negotiators would return to the White House to continue debt limit talks, but that the two sides were “still far apart.” McCarthy repeated that defaulting was not an option, but also offered no concessions to his insane list of demands. In a press conference, he said “it’s not my fault” that the nation is careening towards a crisis that will reverberate throughout the whole world, which is, of course, a lie. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries offered a shrewd synopsis of the problem in a press conference of his own, saying, “House Republicans are determined to crash the economy, because they believe it will benefit them politically.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen them pull this shit. President Biden has built his entire career on “reaching across the aisle” to compromise and “get things done.” But, with all due respect to our guy, what good can come of compromise when one side is saying “Raise the debt ceiling” and the other side is saying, “We’re gonna shoot you in the head,”?

Dreamtown: The Story of Adelanto - Crooked’s newest podcast and an official Selection at this year's Tribeca festival.
Dreamtown is the zany but true story of one down on its luck city in the Southern California desert, and the scrappy - sometimes morally dubious - cast of characters determined to reinvent it.

It has been one year since the devastating mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX, and many of the victims’ families are still searching for answers. A Washington Post investigation found that law enforcement’s deadly decision to wait more than an hour to confront the gunman was not solely the fault of the former chief of the school district’s police force. It was also caused by the inaction of an array of senior and supervising law-enforcement officers who had direct knowledge that the shooting was taking place inside the classrooms, but did not intervene. Those officers remain on the job in the area to this day. The Post reviewed dozens of hours of police body-camera video footage, as well as post-shooting interviews with officers and other resources, and found at least seven officers who stalled even as the evidence that children were still in danger became incontrovertible. Top state law-enforcement and government officials promised to hold all those responsible for the 77-minute delay accountable, but all of the officers in question remain employed by the same agencies they worked for last year. The Texas Department of Public Safety cleared almost all investigations into six officers for wrongdoing, and the department’s chief, Col. Steven McCraw, who said he would personally resign if his agency had failed Uvalde, still insists it did not. Only four of the almost 200 officers who responded from state and local law-enforcement agencies were fired in the wake of the tragedy. Nineteen children and two teachers were murdered one year ago today, and they deserve closure they have not yet received.
What Else?
In an award acceptance speech at the American Law Institute, Chief Justice John Roberts said on Tuesday night that he is “confident” the Supreme Court will resolve its ethics issues and regain public trust that it “adheres to the highest standards of conduct.” Lol, sure.
The House voted to overturn president Biden’s student debt relief plan, with Reps. Jared Golden (D-ME) and Marie Glusenkamp Pérez (D-WA) joining all Republicans in supporting the GOP resolution. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) launched his presidential campaign in disastrous fashion on Twitter Spaces with his pal Elon Musk. Like anvilles-falling-out-of-the-sky-level calamity.
Former U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been—once again—referred to the police by government officials to assess accusations that he may have further violated coronavirus regulations. Johnson was fined last year while still in office for breaking a bunch of Covid rules in 2020 as part of a series of scandals that brought down his administration.
Following a report about Iran’s new underground tunnel system near a nuclear enrichment facility, the head of the country’s nuclear program insisted that the government would cooperate with international inspectors on any “new activities.” Meta executed the last round of a three-part series of layoffs today. Since March, the company has eliminated 10,000 roles after laying off 11,000 employees last fall.
A United Nations migration agency announced on Wednesday that fighting between Sudan’s military and paramilitary forces has displaced over 1.3 million people. Special counsel Jack Smith is wrapping up his criminal investigation into whether or not disgraced former president Donald Trump stole classified White House documents and then took them to his Mar-a-Lago home. Real mystery there!
Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC) declared a state of emergency for North Carolina’s public education system due to “extreme legislation” being pushed by the state’s GOP lawmakers who plan to “starve public education” through further tax cuts and funding increases for private school vouchers. The United States has announced nearly $524 million in additional humanitarian aid for the Horn of Africa in an effort to address some of the extreme effects of climate change and the region’s worst drought in 40 years. Queen of Rock and Roll Tina Turner passed away today at age 83. You Gotta Be Fucking Kidding Me
After rolling out its Pride Collection at the beginning of May, retail giant Target has decided to kowtow to a bigoted right-wing mob by removing some of its products from stores. The company said in a statement that since introducing the collection, “we’ve experienced threats impacting our team members’ sense of safety and wellbeing while at work.” In other words, increasingly violent right-wing bigots have been throwing the merchandise on the floor, vandalizing stores, and harassing or even physically assaulting Target employees. The merchandise Target pulled from its shelves and website included items with slogans like “cure transphobia not trans people.” Target has been celebrating Pride Month with dedicated collections for over a decade. Framing the issue as the Pride merchandise putting Target employees in danger, rather than bigoted psychopaths putting everyone in danger, is a dangerous (and cowardly!) precedent to set. The problem is violent, hateful (let’s be honest) Trump supporters, not a tote bag that says “too queer for here.” Historically, giving in to violent extremists has [checks notes] not worked out.

Light At The End Of The Email
A man who has been paralyzed for 12 years is reportedly able to walk naturally again after receiving brain and spine implants, with technology that creates a “digital bridge” between his brain and his spinal cord. With a slim majority in the state Senate and a trifecta in the state government, Minnesota Democrats have been racking up huge Ws and passing a slew of progressive bills like enshrining abortion access into state law, legalizing recreational marijuana, requiring universal background checks for gun purchases, paid family and medical leave, free breakfast and lunch for all schoolchildren, and a new child tax credit, along with the biggest transportation bill in 15 years. The Louisiana Senate Health and Welfare Committee blocked a ban on gender-affirming health care for trans minors from advancing, a rare such victory in the deep south. After more than two years of contentious negotiations, including the first newsroom walkout since the 1970’s, the New York Times reached a deal for a new contract with the union representing the majority of its employees. 2023.05.20 19:47 tradice9 Since more people are moving south for warmer weather in recent years, are the job markets in the Sunbelt more or less competitive than the national average?
In the last few years, people have been moving more and more to FL, GA, NC, TN, TX, and AZ. How comparatively strong is the accounting job market in those areas vs (NYC, NJ, LA, Chicago, SF, Seattle, DC)?
Historically, the lower wages in the South were offset by the lower COL, but with recent trends, housing costs and inflation have skyrocketed in many of those areas.
Are wages keeping pace with the COL in the Sunbelt? And there enough available jobs despite the migration to the sunbelt?
