2023.06.02 16:34 gergesim Rep telling me I can't upgrade box for 4k?

Hey, I've been working with Comcast chat support and seem to be getting some misinformation. I'm hoping someone here has some more info. I have the XG1v3 and, with that box, I can't get the 4k service I pay for. I bring my own modem, but it's one Comcast explicitly supports, the Netgear C7000v2 (Nighthawk).
The support rep I chatted with tried to tell me that because I'm not renting my cable modem directly from Comcast, I can't use a 4k cable box like the XG1v4. That doesn't seem correct to me. I recently upgraded my TV and am disappointed in the picture quality. I'm just trying to get the quality Xfinity advertises and feel like I should be able to.
Can anyone from Comcast help, or anyone else point me in the right direction?

2023.05.30 21:33 WittyDistraction To replace our Modem/Router combo or not?

Hello. I've done a few hours of research on modems, routers, and combos and find my head spinning a bit - hoping Reddit can come through.
After scrolling on this subreddit I realize frequent 'rec request' posts must be very frustrating, but I'm going to shoot my shot and appreciate any guidance, sincerely.
We currently have a Netgear Nighthawk (C7000v2) and due to an unfortunate, ahem, water accident (not it) we are in the market. [Water hit the side of the unit and while LAN connections work, the Wifi does not.]
We bought the same model to hold us over- we're had pretty good luck with it. My partner wants a combo unit to condense the footprint, but I'm always after the best 'deal.' My question is whether we should use this as an opportunity to upgrade (e.g., to WiFi 6)?
My problem is, I am a tad overwhelmed in my research and have some decision paralysis. I understand WiFi 6 & 6e are more 'cutting edge' and that standalone devices are more robust than combos. I also have gleaned that DOCSIS3.1>3.0.
I've looked at the Arris Surfboard G36 & G34, Netgear CAX80, and Motorola MT8733 - the latter two based on a recommendation from this subreddit. [I promise I tried to do my research before I wrote this post.] While the Netgear is appealing, the price is not. The Motorola is also more than I was hoping to spend (~200-250$).
We have 1gb speed via Comcast Xfinity. My partner and I both work from home, although I'm hardlined w/ an ethernet cable, she uses wifi. Sometimes, we are both on Zoom calls at the same time. I casually game and we stream on multiple devices at the same time. Our home is ~1300 sq ft townhouse, with the unit downstairs by the TV and our office upstairs on the 'other side' of the house (as much as that's possible in this space).
Any thoughts, recommendations, or even reliable sources to continue my research would be much appreciated.
tl;dr: Looking for modem/router combo advice. Currently have Netgear C7000 w/ cap of 800mbps, w/ Xfinity 1g connection. Considering upgrading to combo unit that runs WiFi 6 and is (ideally) under $250.

2023.05.25 02:51 Boring-Charge Upstream not stabilizing, no connection

(This seems to be the right place to post, but if it isn’t sorry)
So this has been an issue for a while now, but considering until recently the problem only occurred during the day, when no one was home, no technician was called. Which may have made it worse in hindsight.
A guy came out today, put in a fresh coax and line from the house to where the service comes through near the power lines, it worked for a bit, but after moving it from where he was testing the service to where it usually sits, it didn’t work. So I moved it back to where he tested it, not back online.
I’ve reset and rebooted the modem, but no dice. It’s been several hours and I want to know if there is any other sort of troubleshooting I can try before making another appointment.
The modem is a netgear c7000v2 that I own and purchased recently (after the connectivity problems began, I was hoping that would fix it)

2023.05.22 22:13 Revzerksies Archer AX55 Pro much praise.

I never see praise here on reddit especially when it come to computer stuff.
I just switched from a netgear C7000v2 to the Archer AX55. It was so flawless going from my old router to the new one. I just changed the SSID to match my old one, and 63 smart home items switched over without an issue. Speed went from 200 down to over 600 down.

2023.05.16 01:46 XboxJockey Internet cutting off every 2 hours almost on the dot.

So for about 2 weeks, my internet has been randomly going out for maybe 45 seconds to 3 minutes. It's nothing crazy, but a mild inconvenience. I've had my local ISP to my apartment twice now. Both times they assumed it was cable related. But it's still happening. My router (C7000v2 NightHawk AC1900) is about 3 years old, but has never acted up before. Today, I was able to time these outages and it seems that almost every 2 hours, it goes out. Give or take 5-10 minutes. But its consistent at 2 hours. Is there a reason for this I'm not aware of it? What do i need to tell my ISP to help them isolate the issue? Or is it my router acting up randomly? I have no other issues aside from this. Speeds are fine. Connection strength is fine. Just the disconnecting. Thank you.
Edit: my UPS seemed to be the culprit. Somehow it was causing the router to reboot. Lack of power I suppose. No other devices plugged in were having the same issue, but switching it to directly into the outlet has stopped the reboots.

2023.05.15 21:38 Dreamchime First time building a pc, please help

Hey, I've lived a life of prebuilt gaming laptops until now, and I've grown tired of them. My current one is on death's door, so I'm using it as an opportunity to switch to a real pc. The thing is, after trying to research all the parts myself, I'm pretty overwhelmed. So, please help me.
>**What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.**
Primarily gaming. However, I’m also interested in potentially doing content creation (video recording, maybe streaming eventually). So I would like to be able to game in 2K and record without issue, as well as do some video editing.
Elden Ring is currently the most demanding game on my “to play” list. Some other games I plan to play when they release include Baldur's Gate 3, Armored Core 6, and the next Monster Hunter. I switch between M&KB and a wired controller, depending on the game.
I will also be using dual monitors for watching shows + gaming simultaneously.
>**What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?**
My starting point is $2,500, but I can be convinced to go up to around $3,000 if you think it’s worth it (or necessary) for my requests.
>**When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.**
ASAP
>**What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)**
Tower, OS, a 30”ish 2K monitor
>**Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?**
USA, upstate NY. No microcenter.
>**If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.**
Keyboard
Mouse
Headphones+Mic Worth noting, this headset came with an external sound card which I use, and therefore requires a usb slot.
Secondary Monitor
>**Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?**
Not any time soon, but possibly both in the future.
>**Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)**
2TB SSD, although 4 would be nice.
>**What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.**
WiFi is essential; my current situation doesn’t allow for an ethernet connection.
Current Router
>**Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?**
I prefer darker colors. I don't mind some RGB for accentuation; just no crazy rainbow vomit please.
>**Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?**
Yes. 10 or 11, doesn't matter.
>**Extra info or particulars:**
I am wary of liquid coolers; I would much prefer a good air cooling system.

2023.05.11 16:14 Revzerksies Switching to TP Link

I am moving from a Netgear C7000v2 (combo router) to a AX55. I have a ton of smart home 75+ devices (it took me a full day last time to switch). So I'm going to change me SSID and password to match my old one.
I want to get the AX55 working temporarily. You think it would be a possible to hook the new router into the back of the old one to get it working?
I'm trying to turn off the wifi on the old router and run off the new one. I still need to get the modem a Motorola MB8611

2023.04.16 13:07 Sacto1654 Bug with Nighthawk app?

I just recently replaced my Xfinity-supplied cable modem/router with a Netgear C7000v2. Yes, it lacks MU-MIMO but it works. However I did find a bug with the Nighthawk app: turning on Data Monitoring will cause inability of client devices to find the 5 GHz band and sometimes causes the inability to download data . Has NETGEAR acknowledged this bug and will fix it in an update?

2023.04.15 02:33 Flame_MadeByHumans ISP shows no service outages, but modem has no connection

I have frequent issues (multiple times a week) where my modem/router combo can be connected to via wifi, but has no internet connection. This typically last anywhere from 30 minutes to 5 hours, and then internet comes back and all is well.
I have a Netgear Nighthawk C7000v2, and the problem persists over both the 2.4 and 5GHz channels.
My ISP (Xfinity/Cox) came out a few months ago to check on the issue, found no problems (it was working at the time) on their end and concluded that it must be my modem and probably had too much dust. Fortunately, I was still within the 1-year warranty, so I ordered a replacement.
Now with the brand new modem, this problem is still occuring. Xfinity’s outage map always says my address is good and has no issues. When I talk to support, they send test signals and report no problems even during the issue.
Xfinity won’t budge that everything is good on their end so no problem of theirs. I can’t imagine this modem is also having issues fresh out of the box.
Any idea what could be happening?
P.S. Xfinity makes it impossible to troubleshoot unless your currently connected to your modem and the internet. The Xfinity app won’t open or load without a wifi connection, not data, very counterintuitive when wifi isn’t working.

2023.04.11 18:36 OprahsRolls88 Paying for 400Mbps, Getting Around 220mbps down. Whats wrong?

I use Xfinity internet and pay for their 400mbps package. I have a Netgear C7000v2 – Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi Cable Modem Router. Speed tests on my laptop indicate I get around 220Mbps over wifi but my xbox (wired directly into router) gets like half that.
Is it the modem/router? Is it something on Xfinity's end? What can I do to improve this? Thanks!

What am I missing here. IPV6 woes.
Just resetup a PiHole using Unbound and a C7000v2 router. I am using Firebog lists with about 700k domains being blocked. But I don't think it's working because I am only seeing 2% blocked on the Pi. I currently have DHCP set to use the PiHole.
When running this test Test Ad Block - Toolz (d3ward.github.io), I am seeing like 3% of the ads blocked.
When doing ipconfig /all I see that Comcast has 2 IPV6 address in my DNS servers.

When doing a DNS leak check I see 3-4 Comcast servers

I tried disabling IPV6 on my PC to test and everything just stopped working. I am able to edit the IPV6 addresses on the router. I currently have them both blank but obviously it is defaulting back to Comcast. I tried to put in what I thought was IPv6 of PiHole but it wasn't long enough.
I am a sysadmin so this stuff is usually intuitive. But man, networking is my kryptonite.

Desperate cry for help. Netgear C7000v2
I sure hope someone can help me. I have tried everything I know and have officially left my comfort zone. My wifi and wired internet have been spotty. Speedof.me will tell me over 3000ms ping but then if I run it again it will tell me 20ms. The connection drops more frequently for wifi devices but will stay out just long enough that a family member will get a time out when logging into work. I have checked all the connections inside the house and to the router. I restored it to factory defaults once. I have power cycled it multiple times. I took the thing apart to see if anything was obviously wrong inside. I have even tried a new power supply. I just can't quite figure out what is going on. For the record I have Cox internet and they have also reset it once.

2023.03.31 18:56 Think_Application Can I replace the Spectrum Modem & Router with my own?

2023.03.24 16:39 ozzkozz Is MB8611 best in it's price range? Best affordable router to future proof with?

I'm kinda of new to home networking. I always had a modem/router combo and didn't realize that's not what I should be doing. Currently I have a C7000v2 that is starting to fail.
What is an affordable way to future proof if I'm looking to network a 2500sqf home with 4k streaming, cloud gaming, and about a dozen wifi connected devices?
The MB8611 and RAX54S seem nice. Any thoughts?
Also, I've been hearing about mesh wifi networks and I'm not sure if that's what I should be investing in.

2023.03.22 14:58 MikeHockherts Will this set up work?

I was watching a Network Chuck video (https://youtu.be/lUzSsX4T4WQ) where he sets up a PfSense, and he mentions using your modem/router combo as the modem in bridge mode, and also as an access point.
I have a Netgear Nighthawk C7000v2 but have not been able to find a clear answer on this.
I plan on settting it to bridge mode and connecting to a WAN port on the firewall hardware. So coax > modem > firewall WAN firewall LAN > switch > LAN devices
and then… route ANOTHER ethernet cable from c7000v2 to the switch, but with AP mode enabled.
Will this work? Will my wireless activity be behind the firewall on my LAN? Or would I be better off getting a completely separate Access Point entirely?

2023.03.13 05:11 OVKHuman Wifi can't handle more than one task on desktop

I somewhat recently switched to wifi on my desktop for various reasons and I've been having a big issue with the PC being able to do anything, as small as a google search, while doing any type of downloading. I understand that naturally, wifi is worse on performance than ethernet, but I feel like chrome webpage not loading and crashing while downloading a google drive file is not within normal range.

The problem persists in a similar manner where watching youtube will noticeably degrade my wifi performance while browsing (taking upwards of 10s to load a page). My internet plan is pretty good at around 300mbps with speedtest giving me ping under 30ms and I've had no issues with ethernet, nor do I have issues on my phone. It has an added effect of making specifically valorant completely unplayable despite other online games being fine.

I have my suspicions that my wifi router (C7000V2) is very lacking at supporting a number of smart home devices we've connected to it recently but it seems weird that I'm capable of multitasking heavily on other devices like my phone but not my PC. All on top the fact that my PC was doing fine on wifi while I was at college on their wifi (so its probably not the wifi card [AX210]).

It's a weird set of problems and I want to know if anyone here has opinions or suggestions other than a new router

Best cheap router for MoCA?

I have two main questions:
Will this diagram work?
And what's the cheapest/best model for the Router? My Modem is a Netgear c7000v2, and I'm considering purchasing this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BFVQK2ZD/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A28ACUCUGPGKAB&psc=1) for the router and these (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08PDMNK1Z/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1) as my two MoCA adapters.

Also despite my diagram I am considering getting a splitter so I only have to use the one wall port. Would that work? Should I go from wall to in splitter, and use one "out" for the modem and the other "out" for the adapter?

2023.02.27 05:22 arch_202 Newbie Issues: WAN Intermittently dropping.... when AP is connected?

I am a new-ish homeowner assembling my first local network for remote-work, and I ran into an issue this weekend that has me scratching my head.
A couple days ago we started experiencing intermittent drops in WAN connectivity. It would be operating fine, then for about 30 minutes WiFi and ethernet would drop completely.
After some troubleshooting with my ISP and googling, I figured it was likely the modem/router dropping out based on issues others had reported with my router (nighthawk c7000v2). I took the opportunity to go out and make some network improvements: got a standalone modem and wired router, a new AP and an unmanaged switch.
I got it all plugged in and working great aside from the AP (I got the wrong PoE injector). As a stopgap i decided to use the old routemodem as an AP until I got a new injector, and suddenly the issue re-emerged..?! The internet dropped out completely, until I disconnected the nighthawk, then it all came back online.
Here's how I have it set up: modem (Netgear CM700) -> router (TP-Link TL-R605) -> switch (TP-Link TL-SG105) -> AP (nightwak C7000v2)
I have no idea why having the AP connected downstream of the modem/router would effect ethernet connectivity upstream... Am I hallucinating this? Is it a coincidence?
